Office Of Communications Announces Three New Staff Appointments
WASHINGTON, August 18, 2005 - The United States Department of Agriculture's Office of Communications today announced the appointments of three new staff members. Kristin Scuderi will serve as Deputy Press Secretary; Harry Phillips serves as Director of Speechwriting and Jessie Nicholson as Speechwriter in the department.
Scuderi comes to USDA after serving as Communications Director for the Republican Party of Iowa the last two years. She has worked as a television news reporter and fulfilled several communications roles for gubernatorial and congressional candidates. Scuderi grew up on a horse ranch south of Colorado Springs, and received her journalism degree from Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
Phillips joined USDA in July as Director of Speechwriting. He has worked for the Departments of Energy and Transportation, the Export-Import Bank of the United States, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), and the Office of Personnel Management. He worked as a press secretary for three Members of Congress and was a speech and presentation coach at Raytheon Co. He has won over 25 writing awards, including last year's top speechwriting prize from the nation's largest public relations group - the 2004 Bronze Anvil Award from the Public Relations Society of America. He and his wife Roberta and son Jamie reside in northern Virginia.
Nicholson joined USDA as a speechwriter in July. Beginning in 2003, she served as Acting Director of Communications and Assistant Director of Communications for Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty. Prior to that, she worked for the Minnesota House of Representatives for several years. She is a graduate of the College of St. Scholastica. Nicholson recently moved to northern Virginia to join her husband, Kevin, a Marine Corps officer.
