I cut and pasted a portion of the live USDA teleconference from yesterday. All of you should get a big kick out of this. Remember this Clifford guy is one of the head Vets with the USDA:

"REPORTER: Hey. It's Beth Weiss with USA Today. So a 10-year-old. Can you spell the name of that breed, or at least say it slowly?

DR. CLIFFORD: Santa Gertrubis. I may have get the exact spelling. It's been awhile since I've spelled it. I think it's, the first name's Santa, which is S-A-N-T-A. And the last one is G-E-R-T-R-U-B-I-S. "

It's good to feel like I'm in such competent hands.

Watched a news clip on an American channel yesterday where the Hollywood reporters were talking about the fear of eating beef in the USA  . These folks were amazing. More theatric that Canadian news. They had an official talking about the safety measures etc. and how there should be no fear in America.   America is run on fear.

Anywhoo, this fellow went on to explain how it is all about this prion thing and how this prion thing is the problem. Made it sound like some kind of alein imported thing that found it's way to America but will be stopped. Could somebody please tell somebody that prions are naturally occuring and that it is not until they become misfolded that they are a problem?

Wait a minute,,,, we can't do that, we may not have anything to talk about on this board any more.

I guess it must have found it's way from mars to the UK hey???????

Keep that fear alive boys. Let's jump on the border bandwagon once again. We can help the multinational packers drag this thing out for another few years yet, or we can wake up and start testing beef.

Mike, Dr. Clifford may get a call from the King Ranch on how to spell.

I can't wait to see his spelling version plastered all over the newspapers.

The Gert Association should be on this like a duck on a junebug.

rkaiser- If you've been watching William Shatner week on History Channel you'd know the exact planet and mode of transport  :???:   They are crediting everything to Shatner and Star Trek......

I am afraid that's exactly what R-Calf will continue to do, play Fear Factor with this latest positive. Either that or start calling for regional quarrantines within the US.

Well, I heard the opposite -- Dr. Sanjay Gupta explaining how all you have to do is cook the meat enough and there is absolutely no danger - on CNN.

That's the guy R2 --- but don't tell SH that I was watching CNN.

He did say that it would reduce the risk however, not stop it. His absolutely no risk stand was about SRM's

I will agree to a point Bill, but have to say that the level headed Rcalf leadership is simply being used by those who gain by continueing this debacle the most.

Level headed was descibed on here once as snoose running out of both sides of their mouth at one time was it not?

On the Alabama cow story they interviewed some consumers who said the same thing--all you have to do it cook it well. Some of these scripts are just canned video takes ready for local stations to take and use. I just can't believe the reporting is not any better than that. Whether it is a designed part of the programming or just bad reporting, it does have an effect. The people who control the decisions on how to run the story have a lot of power on the spin.

Wouldn't have anyone in mind would you econo. Like say someone who could benefit from prolonging the BSE story, avoid testing to stop the captive supply;;;;; while deceiving the public????

I was refering to the packer R2 - What's the matter too early for you. You know I don't blame those level headed fellows at Rcalf.

Level headed - refer to comments on another thread.

Gosh it's beautiful here, got all the doors and windows open, just watered the pansies, daffodils blooming all over the place.

Yeah whatever R2, we have work to do around here you know.

Listen, I don't disagree with your blasting CNN. It's a matter of knowing why you're blasting them. You still think on the side of human safety, I think on the side of stopping the BSEconomic issue we face on this continent. Whatever R2, you know that you and I are somewhat on the same side.

I'm Jealous of your flowers you know. We're wading in more snow than we've had all winter. But spring is on the way here too.

Just thinking about, with all the millions of dollars spent on advertising Angus, Angus Thickburgers, genuine Angus beef advertised in store fliers, etc. What if this had been an Angus instead of a breed most people are not familiar with, can't spell or pronounce anyway. If I walked down the street in town and told someone that I had 'Santa Gertrudis', they probably would say, "Oh, that's to bad, you should have worn a condom!"

Would they just be called thickburgers instead of Angus thickburgers? Or instead of try our new Angus steak sandwich, try our new steak sandwich? Just wondering if it would have had more of an impact on consumers or if fast food places would have started distancing themselves from throwing the name around. Just thinking out loud! :?

Our first positive was a pb Angus and that fact had no impact on branded product up here. It is a good question though as given the number of Angus cattle in the US it very well could happen.

The big deifference up here is that there has not been any domestic groups especially those that represent cattlemen questioning the safety of our beef.

Don't you think those kind of questions asked before bse was found in Canada would have saved you a bunch of headache? A stitch in time saves nine.

I am not sure what you mean but our biggest headaches and perhaps those American producers will be facing are caused by misinformation with most of it coming out of Billings.
