Vacation

Help Support Ranchers.net:

I'd say Deadwood, but I know you've already been there. :wink:
There is a Cowboy Poetry gathering in Lewistown, Mt in August that
I've heard is a lot of fun if you like that sort of thing. (I do!).
If that interests you I can get the exact dates.

After watching that video of the Poetry Gathering in Utah, we want to go
too!! Lots of people there we would like to hear/see. Waddie Mitchell
is one of my favorites. Don't mean to bore anyone, but here's one of
his poems that when I read it, I can still hear him recite it:

Though you're not exactly blue,
Yet you don't feel like you do
In the winter, or the long hot summer days.
For your feelin's and the weather
Seem to sort of go together,
And you're quiet in the dreamy autumn haze.
And the last big steer is goaded
Up that chute, and safely loaded;
And the summer crew has ceased to hit the ball;
Well, a fellow starts to dragging
To the home ranch with the wagon,
When they've finished shippin' cattle in the fall.

Only two men left a standin'
On the job for winter brandin'
And your partner he's a loafin' at your side.
And a brand new saddle creakin',
But you never hear him speakin'
You feel it's goin' to be a quiet ride.
But you savvy one another,
You know him like a brother,
He is friendly; he's just quiet, that is all:
He is thinkin' while he's draggin'
To the home ranch with the wagon--
When they've finished shippin' cattle in the fall.

And the saddle hosses stringin'
At an easy walk swinging
In behind the old chuckwagon movin' slow.
They are weary, gaunt and jaded
With the mud and brush they've waded,
And they settled down to business long ago.
Not a horse is feelin' sporty,
Not a horse is actin' snorty.
In the spring them brutes were full of buck and bawl;
Now they're gentle as they're draggin'
To the home ranch with the wagon,
When they've finished shippin' cattle in the fall.

And the cook he leads the retreat
Perched up high on his wagon seat,
With his old hat pulled down forward on his head.
He used to make the old team hustle,
Now he doesn't move a muscle,
And a feller might imagine he was dead.
'Cept his old cob pipe is smokin'
As he lots that team go pokin'.
Hittin' every hump, holler in the road.
No ,the cook aint been drinkin'
Just settin' there, thinkin'
'Bout the people and the places that he's knowed.
He watches the dust a trailing
Two little clouds are sailin'.
Big mirage like lakes and timber tall.
And it's lonesome when your are drivin'
to the home ranch with the wagon –
When they've finished shippin' cattle in the fall.

Here's a link to the one in Lewistown, Mt. They don't have known
names that the one in Utah does, but Mike Logan is one of my
very favorite people and cowboy poet (burnt, he's not a cowboy
either, but his poetry is some of the best) is on the list so I hope
we can go listen to him. He's done some great photography and
has some books out, like "Montana Is", "Ranchin' Is", "Yellowstone
Is" and they are all photography and verse.

Then he has just poems in "Bronc to Breakfast."

Anyhow, here's the link:

and a list of the performers:

Lane wasn't very old when he recited Mike Logan's Brands at a funeral for a old cattle buyer. He had done it for him the fall before he died and his widow requested Lane do it at the funeral at about 10 years old.
Lane used to do this Waddie Mitchell poem when he was even younger. Seemed he had to practice it at the supper table every night. :shock:

Story With a Moral

Now I know there's things worse that make cowpunchers curse,
And I reckon it's happened to us all.
Though it's years since, you bet, when I think of it yet,
It still makes my old innards crawl.

I was makin' a ride to bring in one hide
That hadn't showed up in the gather;
I was riding upstream, daydreamin' a dream,
When I caught there was somethin' the matter.

Near some quakin' asp trees, I had caught in the breeze
A stench that was raunchy and mean,
And I reckoned as how it might be the old cow,
So I rode to a bend in the stream.

Shore 'nuff that cow lied in the crick there and died;
Hard tellin' how long she'd been been there.
She was bloated and tight, twas a horrible sight—
She was oozin' and slippin' her hair.

Her eye sockets were alive with maggots that thrive
On dead flesh, putrid yellow and green,
And the hot sun burnin' down, turnin' pink things to brown,
Spewin' oily gunk in the stream.

Well, I spurred upwind fast to get away from the blast
Of the heavy stench the cow made;
And I felt bad seein's how I'd lost the old cow,
And I pulled up near a tree in the shade.

Then I got sick to the core, rememberin' just minutes before
I'd done something that made me feel worse;
Not thirty yards down I'd stepped off to the ground
And drank 'til my belly near burst.

For months after it, just the thought made me spit,
And I'd live it over like a bad dream.
And the moral, I think, is if you must take a drink,
Never, ever remount and ride upstream.

Balestabber, come on out. I'd drive to Heber just to visit. Been thinking about going anyway. :D Unless Cure shows up! :wink: :p :lol: :lol: :lol:

That Waddie Mitchel poem brings back some bad memories. :shock: :gag:

Good idea, Katrina.

If your time is short, there is to be an interesting week-end event at Ft. Pierre Sept. 14 and 15. It's a Heritage Festival, or some such name. Focused on the old west and traditions, music, etc. Don Edwards will be singing and there is a sort of 'trade show' with demonstrations of life skills from yesteryear, old tack, etc. that I've heard so far. Cowboy poetry, etc.
There probably is more information on the KGFX radio website, tho I've not yet checked it.

We just got back from a five day trip....but pretty busy with a day and a half of m eetings in Denver, good tho they were. Then two days at Cheyenne for the end of the CFD rodeo. And it was very good.

They have a new stock contractor and it showed! Stock was bigger and tougher. Several great, high scoring rides, too. Some of their changes weren't so good. Cutting number of contestants, saddle and barebacks far more than the bull riders. And single steer roping was cut, too, I believe. CFD needs to remember which events were the traditional ones that built the show, imo. There were no trick riders, or big hitches of 'famous' draft horses the last two days, anyway. We really enjoy those.

Anyway, it was a good break in a tough summer ranching in SD.

Good ideas all.... We have to leave in the next day or two... School starts for Dean the fourteenth... And we want to haul dirt....

mrj... I heard about the changes in cheyenne.... My best friend use to trick ride for Harry Vold.... We usually go down together for a day or two.. I don't think she was ready yet for the changes.... We liked the big hitches too and no trick riding??? Lots of grumblings I hear.... But we must give them a chance.. I love the bull doggin and calf roping the twenty foot score line for the livestock really makes it a horse race... And the wild horse racing....

I think on this vacation thing we will just throw a couple pairs of underwear in and point the hybird in a direction... Hubby said something about maybe going where it has rained and is green..... Pretty depressing around here....
