Valentine Livestock Auction Co., in Valentine, Neb., will host its third fund-raiser for R-CALF USA at 3 p.m. CST, Thursday, Feb. 17. Proceeds will go to R-CALF USA to support its work on trade issues that affect independent U.S. cattle producers.
R-CALF USA filed a lawsuit on Jan. 10, 2005, against USDA that asked the U.S. District Court in Billings, Mont., to overturn the agency's Final Rule on reopening the Canadian border to live cattle younger than 30 months of age, and additional beef products.
Greg Arendt, manager of the auction house, said there is still a need to get R-CALF USA's message out to not only cattle producers, but the general public as well.
"There are ranchers and other folks out there who want to communicate to the public that R-CALF's agenda is right on target, and that's what we hope to help R-CALF accomplish," Arendt said.
Chris Harvey, a rancher in the Valentine area who also serves on the board of directors for the South Dakota Stockgrowers association, is donating an 800-pound steer for the rollover auction. The animal is a black-baldy, and is not quite yet a yearling.
"The only thing standing between us and the reopening of the Canadian border is R-CALF, and we just all need to stand behind R-CALF and everything it does for cattle producers across the country," said Harvey. "We believe in both organizations and the cause, so we're doing all we can to try to help."

Subject: Senate Introduces Joint Resolution to Disapprove USDA's Final Rule: Need Member Help to Get More Co-Sponsors
Background: Since Jan. 26, R-CALF USA has been working to encourage both Republican and Democrat Senators to introduce and support a Joint Resolution of Disapproval that, if passed by both Houses and signed by the President, would effectively repeal USDA's Final Rule to allow the importation of Canadian beef and cattle.
A Joint Resolution of Disapproval is the tool Congress has to repeal inappropriate rules written by federal agencies, such as USDA's Final Rule that will subject the U.S. to unnecessary and avoidable risks from BSE.
If 30 Senators sign a petition for the Joint Resolution of Disapproval, then the Resolution bypasses the committee process and goes directly to the floor of the Senate. No amendments or filibusters are allowed. Thus a Joint Resolution of Disapproval can proceed quickly through Congress.
Status: Today, with bipartisan support, a Joint Resolution of Disapproval calling for the repeal of the entire USDA Final Rule was introduced in the U.S. Senate. Senators Kent Conrad (D-ND) and Craig Thomas (R-WY), along with Senators Pete Domenici (R-NM), Max Baucus (D-MT), Ken Salazar (D-CO), Tim Johnson (D-SD), Byron Dorgan (D-ND), Harry Reid (D-NV), and Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) all signed on as Primary Sponsors of the Joint Resolution.
This is HUGE, but we need to act quickly. As you all know, the USDA's final Canadian border rule goes into effect March 7th. In order for the proper procedure to be in place, this resolution needs to gain momentum, immediately!
Action: We need no less than 30 Senators to sign on as co-sponsors of the Joint Resolution of Disapproval. If your Senator is not among the Primary Sponsors listed above, please call them and urge them to immediately sign on to the Joint Resolution of Disapproval.
Urge your Republican Senators to call Senator Craig Thomas to become a co-sponsor.
Urge your Democrat Senators to call Senator Kent Conrad to become a co-sponsor.
We need to get as many Senators to co-sponsor as we can, as quickly as we can, so please begin making your calls immediately.
