Nice Hereford bulls at the Bull Bash in Valentine, Nebraska on February 14, 2009. This was the only picture I took all day, and for this I feel real bad. Main Street was buzzing with activity and lots of bulls were in town on display. There was also quite a bit of machinery being shown off. It was just cold enough that it was hard to get fired up about taking photos with cold fingers. :? IF I was in the market for any Hereford bulls, the dark one on the right did impress me. He has a lot of pigment around his eyes, seems to be of moderate size, and the dark color would work well on Angus cows. The owner of the bulls is on the left, and Peach's cousin who just happened to be walking by, is on the right.

The Bar J Wranglers performed in the evening.
Theyareafinebunchofentertainers.jpg

They are a fine bunch of entertainers.
TheyhailfromJacksonHoleWyoming.jpg

And they hail from Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Iwasnttheonlyguytheretakingpictures.jpg

I wasn't the only guy there taking pictures.
Aprettylaidbacksortofguybuthecanpla.jpg

A pretty laid back sort of guy, but he can play any instrument that has strings.
Thetwomenontheoutsidearebrothers.jpg

The two men on the outside are brothers. Their dad started the band many years ago. The man in the middle can sing way down llllloooooowwwwww............
Thesteelguitarplayercanalsopickaban.jpg

The steel guitar player can also pick a banjo with the best of them. The next guy is quite a fiddle player and winner of national contests.
Theboysoldgrannyalsoshowedup.jpg

The boys' granny also showed up to perform.

If you ever get a chance to see and hear the Bar J Wranglers, don't pass up the chance. They are very good.

BBRoo is right , Valentine is a neat little town. I have only been through there once. I was told I had to stop at the western store and shop. I might still be there as we rolled thru town about 2 in the morning.

Thanks, Jassy. I am really glad you added pictures to the post. Yours give a lot better idea of what the streets and various attractions looked like, and your additions are very welcome.

It was a fun day, as it always turns out to be. I think this was the eight annual event, which is held on a Saturday close to Valentine's Day. The merchants and organizers of the event are to be commended for creating a fun diversion from the winter doldrums.

Whoa, my kinda town!!!! Bulls and studs all along main street. Ahhh...... :D Soap, you have any room for an apprentice? :)

Come on over. You will have invaluable training, and we won't charge you any tuition. You get free board and room. We won't pay you any wages, but you can have a little bit of time to do your school work. It will be a night calving proposition, you understand.

Miles City, MT has a beef breeders show similar to the one in Valentine. I believe MC's show is around 15 years old or so, it's a great event. This year though they only had 40 pens but I've seen it as high as 75. MC is a great town for this event, very similar to Valentine except the streets are much narrower which provides for a little more intimate setting. Of course MC boasts about a half dozen saloons within three blocks of each other so there is always alot of honky-tonkin goin on afterwards. The Bison Bar owner told me once it was their best day of the year besides the Buckin Horse Sale.

Well, shoot! That's about what I've got goin' here to home, and I get a nice change of scenery. :D I can't usually fall asleep very early anyway. I'd be happy to stay up all night long and have a purpose in staying up. Calving out cattle is something I want to specialize in anyhow, so it's a win-win!

Soapweed, thankyou for the kind words about our pen of bull calves at Bull Bash. I was really surprised to see the picture of them on Ranchers net and my son was really tickeled also when I showed him. Bull Bash is really fun event where people can get together and talk cows and bulls and just enjoy the day . I just wish I would have been at the pen so I could have met you face to face. Maybe next year because I am sure we will be there. :) Also keep taking pictures I really enjoy them. rd

How about you intern at Soapweed's place, and then do your residency here??? The pay is the same, just different cattle and scenery :D .

I really did like your three bulls that were at the "bash." Besides that, there is a color to suit anybody with just those three. There is mellow yellow, medium, and well done. The "well done" bull was my pick.

Hope to meet you next year. If I'd known you were rodger dodger, I'd have waited until you got back to the pen.

Well sure!! Actually, it'd make a little more sense to head to your place first and get in a couple years at Laramie. Then, I could head on to UNL and work for Soap. Well, probly you're not real close to Laramie, but at least you're in the same state.

I'd be willing to bet we could keep you calving year round MYT. When you are done down there I will be into it up here and gcreek and then a trip down the Cowboy Trail will take you until August sometime. I am sure I heard of some September calvers, to take you into November. Take a few months off to help with PCC bull sales and rest and then start all over at Soaps. I would think we could all pay a one way ticket and room, board and entertainment. Two years of that and you would have more calving experience than most of us full timers!
