vigortone mineral

 To heck with the Cows mineral program. I'm going to need to sprinkle some VIGORTONE on my cornflakes tomorrow morning. Its supossed to be -35 C when I have to feed the cows

I've been thinkin about switching to Vigortone but haven't done it yet. What you said FH about them removing Iodine from the mineral, would this mean you need to keep a salt block out there so that they are getting the required Na, Cl, and I? If they remove it totally I'd be scared of seeing cases of Goiter if your not supplementing I.

I feed vigortone mineral for years and feel it's a very good product. Now I'm feeding a custom made mineral put together by McNess, so far I like it.

It seems like I've tried most all the different brands of minerals. One I wouldn't recommend is Purina wind & rain mineral. I've heard from lots of different sources that Purina wind & rain's weatherproofing prevents the cattle from being able to absorb it.

I still plug my tractor in but i run the cord across a stack of Vigortone just to give the tractor that little extra boost.

BMR, I have found another use for Vigortone.

The seat in my feeding tractor is wore out and the cushion is all gone. So I put a couple empty folded up Vigortone sacks on the seat and Voila! Vigortone keeps my hiney warmer than sitting on the bare metal seat!

Another bonus benefit is The blue/white colors of the Vigortone sack also match the colors of my feeding tractor! Martha Stewart would be so proud of me!

PS: I can't say for sure, but judging from her/his/its attitude, I'd say WHSH probably could use a bit of Ex-Lax along with Vigortone.

Mr Lilly takes the vigortone sacks and puts them in his tractor seat cuz it's got a crack in it, and it absorbs water into the cushion. With all the rain we've had...instead of keepin his hiney warm, vigortone is keepin his hiney dry!!!!! hehe

The local nursing home has been putting a couple of spoonfuls of Vigortone each day in the morning oatmeal.

Come to find out that a bunch of these old ladies are pregnant.

My folks are 85 and still live on the ranch. When we feed a bag of mineral which is usually anywhere from 2 to 4 at time my folks take the bags apart peel off the inner plastic layer and bundle up the paper for recycling. It gives them something worth while to fill up some time and it's good for the environment..

John you should get a carpet scrap for your seat. It is just a little warmer then a couple paper sacks.
I have been on Vigortone for almost 2 years and am noticing a marked improvement all around. My cows and calves are Blacker my runt pen calves are bigger and fewer of them. :-)
Calves that needed treatment this fall responded very well to treatment.
The biggest plus is that my cattle eat it. I know some say it's only for the salt but at least it's a way to get "some" mineral in them. I consider it's and investment if they eat it and an expense if i put mineral out and they don't eat it.

Heck my runt pen only has one it because of it.................and I named him WHSH oh and he only has one nut

FH I still am wondering what they do for Iodine if they removed it. I'd be scared of the cows over producing thyroxin if there is no Iodine in the mineral. Maybe it's tailored to different areas and yours doesn't need to supplement I.

Jake, my mistake.

I errored...they took the IRON OXIDE out (which is what made the mineral have the reddish color.) Iodine (EDDI) is still in the mineral.
EDDI is thought to be the best iodine there is.

I had to check on this. Iodate EDDI (if I recall correctly) is on the tag.

Thanks for questioning this and giving me the chance to correct myself.

Not a problem, I'll keep ya on your toes.

FH, the tag on my 3V2S lists "Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide" (aka EDDI) But iodine isn't listed on the guaranteed analysis.

I sure ain't gonna type out any more big words like that for a while!

BMR, I've had a new replacement bottom seat cushion for quite some time, just ain't put it on yet!

That big word is short for IODINE, John SD.

Yep FH, but why don't they express the iodine as a % or ppm value on the GA? Maybe because the EDDI comes in the salt used in the ingredient list instead of as a seperate component?

I know my supplier sells a American Stockman brand Hi-Salt with EDDI product that is basically a higher trace mineralized salt than regular trace mineralized salt. The iodine content is quite a bit higher than regular TM or plain iodized salt.

Here is the way I understand it:

Anything on the guaranteed analysis is there because the government makes you put there. Iodione % isn't mandated by the government. But rest assured, John, that Vigortone uses only the best ingredients. I learned this when the truckers told me how long it took to load the trucks from the ingredient suppliers, (because of Vigortone's stringent criteria) and how fast they loaded for the competition.

At a calcium plant in Florida, some interested people took a tour. The tour guide told them that Vigortone takes the 26th sift...and other companies just came in and went out with whatever.

Hope this helps. I don't want us to get bogged down with technical stuff here. It gets boring. But I'm glad you asked. Always room for me to learn more. Now if I could just remember it... :P
