FYI,

Yes, I am stupid, ever time I buy something from WalMart I end up looking very dumb. MCG and I made a hasty trip to Billings this afternoon, left the house around 3:15 this afternoon, round trip Billings to here is 3 hours. Got here by 7:15 only because daughter and I went to WalMart to purchase our groceries.

This is the second time I've had a major complaint. When will I learn?

We never killed a beef last year so once in awhile I will purchase some steaks just because we crave them (only beef left at home is hamburger, short ribs and stew meat). I have no problem with short ribs and stew meat, we have wonderful recipes which incorporate them. Same with hamburger.

I, Hanta Yo purchased some Beef Sirloin Steak Petite from WalMart. What does it say on the sticker placed on the package?? (Guess what, me, a rancher, am too much in a hurry to read the label, wanna get home just like everybody else) and it says:

SIRLOIN PETITE STEAK

Enhanced with up to an eleven percent solution (in teeny, tiny words)

Use or freeze by 05.30.06

Price/lb: $4.18
Net Wt. 1.40 lb

Total Price $5.85

Doesn't that "enhanced" version sound like POULTRY?????

So now I am figuring out, the consumer is in a hurry after work, don't read the labels (for which I was guilty) because they are in a hurry.

I'll let ya know how it eats  [/i]

I don't know about it being enhanced with poultry, but a freind of ours used to work at Safeways as a meat cutter and they pumped water into the steaks...hopefully its just water :? ??

remember the old commercial for chicken nuggets where the person says "parts is parts"....sound familiar????
I gotta admit that when I gotta buy our beef, I like to go to Safeway for their "Ranchers Reserve"...super tender, tasty and safeway has good prices...the ranchers reserve is higher priced than their "bargain" brand, but well worth it!!
By the way, if you should find out what the "solution" added was, let the rest of us know!!

Hey, folks, the eating experience was AWFUL!!! Maybe a little easy to chew because of the liquid injected, but no flavor. No pink in the meat - no fat in the meat since it is probably select MINUS purchased cheap by WALMART and ENHANCED to make it edible. I'm in big trouble with sw   for doing what I did BECAUSE I KNOW BETTER!!! I wasted over $10.00 on a piece of cr@p and it didn't eat very good. WalMart is NOT doing justice to our BEEF!!!! :!:

Mrs Greg,

I meant enhance with the eleven percent solution, perhaps the same solution they enhance poultry with. I know when we buy poultry (rarely) half of the lbs in the poultry is water.

 Oh OK...LOL

Any beef we buy, we buy from Albertsons. Boy, am I a bad girl

Albertson's beef is REAL and has worked with Beef Council (checkoff bucks) in promoting our beef.

Sorry, Albertsons

That's ok, my mind gets way ahead of my fingers and sometimes I don't clarify myself, besides I don't know if Canada does the same thing with their poultry. I wouldn't know. I think this Ranchers.net is a neat cultural exchange. A good way to learn how our Northern neighbors do things. Along with our Australian people and countless others from different countries.

I'm sorry I can't tell you if Canada does it,we only use our own meat, and when we run out we have two excellent butcher shops in our small town,we're spoiled.I guess thats sure somthing I should be up on huh?
About Safeway,in Alta. they really support 4-H :D and show up at achievement day, they but alot of 4-H steers!

Just got curious Hanta when you posted this about Wal-Mart. Look at what they have to say about "your deliscious steak" okay I am being ugly(haha) but seriously they think they are helping the consumer. Think we will stick to our FRESH COW....

Easty

Checked it out, Easty. I should have taken a pic of the meat and I know select from choice and this was red, watery looking beef with hardly any marbling. That's why I came up with Select MINUS and they don't have the grade on the packaging, nor in the meat counter.

If the consumer doesn't know how to cook beef (as most of us ranchers do) then a steak from WalMart will be a BAD EXPERIENCE. You'll just be able to chew it, and NO FLAVOR!!!! No flavor at all

Send them out this way-they can get some good steers in the Toon Town for 1400. I wish they'd sell higher-thats what's going to get me my University Education. All the work that goes into them and you only make a 100 dolar profit. *note-this includes time spent with them, feed, and supplies.

I just got to thinking, (WHOA, watch out folks, I'm THINKING  ) even though I was raised a town person, my parents still purchased a whole beef from one of my dad's employees every year. They knew what good beef was, and they knew how to cook it. SOOOO! Knowing how a good sirloin steak, etc should taste like, went to the "Sizzler", used to be popular but I don't think they are in business anymore. Anyway, they would advertise a sirloin steak dinner for 4.99, includes everything. Went to one of those specials, ate the steak, it tasted the same as the one I ate tonight. Could chew it, but no flavor, it almost looked fake! Now I know how they could sell sirloins so cheap, it is select minus (or worse) pumped up with up to 11 % water (or whatever their secret concoction is). I always thought it was pressed meat, now I know better

Anyway, lesson well learned

Hanta,

Ive done dumber things-today even. lol. If we wouldnt do these thinge we would all be politicians with ties sitting at desks screwing the country up. lol. When you think you did something stupid-think about how good it was-it could have been worse. lol.

Yep- We're acclimating the masses to generic, unlabeled, ungraded beef so they can be sold anything brought in from anywhere in the world  ....

Yep, I would have to agree with you Hanta. We are like the rest of you, mostly eat our own, or buy from the local locker up the road. We did buy some from our H.E.B grocery store Easter, but we talked to the fella in the back  and he pulled some for us...they were good. We do not have a Safeway anylonger in our area. And the Albertson stores are like in the larger towns. I am spoiled and admit it, just like home grown beef....

Just for your information, OT,

Packers need to find a pen of select steers/and or heifers for ole' WalMart. They make their deal. They get accused of underbuying American Beef when all The Packers want to do is purchase select beef for WalMart.

NOW, think about this
econ 101, R-calfers, etc, etc.

Do You Understand that the PACKER has orders for different grades of beef from everyone in the whole wide world??

They have to keep up with "killing" "select" beef for WalMart. They also have to keep up with "killing" beef for restaurants who want prime, choice.

They have to keep up with grocery store chains who want "choice" grade. Maybe you people need to go through a day's work with the hated Packers. You just might learn something

The pens of cattle who wouldn't grade choice , they go to WalMart. Those pens of cattle who will grade choice or prime, they go to their separate Restaurants or are sold to reputable grocery stores such as ALBERTSONS. If anyone wants to disagree with me, then you prove to me I'm wrong.

Dont feel bad Hanta,I was in town awhile back, buying some necessities, coffe cartridges, salt etc. I was curious about this new super walmart that had come to town, long story short,I did the same as you,but ole dumb me I was'nt in a hurry & I read the package,I had my mind made up,I was gonna try some of their beef!!
Bought me a big ole pretty rib eye,had it on the grill that evening charcoaling it,problem was it kept curling up in a ball, some meat does that to a degree but this stuff was terrible, finally get it cooked and like you said absolutely no taste, fairly tender but no taste, kinda like eatin a piece of cardboard, anyway cowdogs liked it,bout two small bites was plenty for me..................good luck
PS to top it off I had a freezer full of meat,so dont feel too bad  .

Yep- but wouldn't it be great if a consumer (like you) who went in looking for a good eating experience and a good piece of meat would have ALL the information available to help you make your choice-- Like a requirement that any added ingredients (like water or whatever was in there?) had to be clearly labeled (and not in small print)- that the grade quality and country of origin must also be clearly shown...Info that consumers (like you) could use to make a better informed decision and not end up with a bad beef eating experience.....

If we just keep throwing consumers out piles of generic beef in a bin- so that people forget what eating good beef is, I can see why after a while they would all go to chicken ( but Tyson doesn't care, they have the monopoly on that too  ). And Walmart could care less if its beef or chicken they sell- good quality or not- as long as its cheap and keeps going thru their counters......
