I back ground my calves to about 8 weight,free choice home grown hay and about 1% body weight good 40% cubes with a good mineral,anyway I was feeding checking and saw some potential replacement heifers with warts,been a while since I had that problem,guess I will order some vacine from valley vet,anyone have a better idea ?.................good luck
 
They'll rub 'em off or scratch 'em off. Once they do that, they'll develop their own immunity. Assuming a proper mineral program, of course. :wink:
 
WARTS
Warts in cattle are caused by the contagious virus papillomavirus. Four types of the virus are known to produce warts on cattle.

Calves are most susceptible with few cases of warts seen in cattle over 2 years of age. Warts appear 1 to 6 months after infection with the virus. Not all animals carrying the virus will have warts. It can be transmitted from the unapparent carrier to the susceptible calf.

Warts are usually more of an appearance problem than a physical problem. Warts usually shrink and drop off after a few months. This spontaneous recovery is probably the basis for the alleged effectiveness of many home treatments including rubbing with various kinds of oil, toothpaste of various brands, etc.

If there is a severe outbreat in the herd an autogenous vaccine can be prepared from chemically treated warts taken from animals in a herd. This autogenous vaccine is more apt to have the strain or type of papillomavirus causing the wart problem in the herd than the commercial vaccines. Warts can also be removed surgically with a scissors or a side cutter.

I wonder what kinda mineral program we are takin about ? maybe faster horses will know ? LOL.
Seriously been using purina,the Texas formula,had good luck with it for years,I thought vigor tone was something that was used up north ? LOL..............good luck

Mike, I guess that explains the guy that posts on the CT boards always saying that he cuts them off and puts them in his underwear and it always works. What was that guy's name? :lol:

That wont work,neither will cutting them off,because,one of them has a wart on her eye lid,that's how I first noticed,and started checking..............good luck

I'll see if I can find a link. I think his name was...Wally...or something like that.
 
I was wrong. His name is "ollie" not "Wally" and he also says that you can eat them yourself or feed them to geese:

I had not seen that. But I would bet his tongue was firmly attached to his cheek when he made that statement. :lol:
 
I had some calves with warts and I talked to an old timer and he sais to pull some of them off and put them in a pill gun and put them down their neck. I tried that and it worked on my cattle.
 
I bet it would have worked just as well to pull them off and throw them on the ground. Read Mike's post about the "spontaneous recovery from home remedies"! That's exactly what happened. All that time pullin and rubbin, and stickin 'em down their throat worked, it's a miracle!!!!!!!!!
