just read this over on Tony Dean
I'm just curious but what is the big beef between the people on here and him? There must be some story behind it. Not that I think he is the greatest man alive, but is he the worst?

Prairie Dog Politics Reaches Rancher.Net
As expected, my article in today's Sioux Falls Argus Leader, dealing with "Prairie Dog Politics,"made the Rancher's Net webs8te in a big way.
Of course, I was vilified, and someone cited a study with SDSU that refuted some of my argument, but I'm not surprised at that either. Much of SDSU's ag work is done on behalf of ranchers, and, in my opionion, is not as objective.
One entry on the Rancher website suggested that the value of an AUM (Animal unit per month) in western South Dakota is pegged at $21.35.
Compare that to the current $1.85 per AUM that ranchers using public lands currently pay. Goodness, some of those folks have one helluva deal at taxpayer expense.
And that's my point.
The ARgus also edited out some comments by SD SEcretary of Agriculture, Larry Gabriel, in which he warned agency folks to support the state's prairie dog policy because "some folks are talking about going out and shooting someone."
And that was the other point of my article. Prairie dog politics is bullying in nature, and one agency guy said to Gabriel, "You just validated what Tony said about how some ranchers play the political game. You made a 19th century comment that has no place in this day and age."
Anyway, with all of my media outlets, I reach a lot more people than "Rancher's Net, and that's what's important.
The more folks know about how some ranchers play the political game, the better.
On the other hand, I also know a great many ranchers who are solid citizens, salt-of-the-Earth types, who ignore all of this BS.
One other thing, I put my name on what I write, which is more than I can say for those who frequent that rancher website.
