FH, Jinglebob, anyone, have you ever seen a large wart on a horse? My 2 year old gelding got this little red spot above his eye lid, it started growing and oozing blood. It now is about an inch across and an inch and a half long. It is starting to dry up and look like a wart on a cow, and still growing. Never seen anything like it on a horse. Just smaller ones they get in the summer from grazing. Think it will fall off, should we cut it off, take him into town to the vet, pour whiskey on it, pour whiskey in me, is it a tumor, What do you all think? :???:

It doesn't sound like a wart, sounds like a sarcoids. What color is your horse, it happens it greys more often. Have it checked out. Is it hard or soft?

the colt is a bay/paint. the growth is right above the eye lid, not on the eye. It is growing straight out and starting to look like a wart on a cow. Worked at a vet clinic, gone through college, animal science, been around horses all of my life and have never seen anything like this or even heard of this kind of growth. Guess it's time for the vet, thanks

My thoughts would be exactly the same as ranchers.
If he isn't grey, is the pigment pink around his eye where the spot is? I would suggest taking him to the best HORSE vet you know. This isn't something to mess around with.

We had something like that above the eye on a brown horse. as well a circle patch on the shoulder. for the life of me I can't remember what they called it but sarcoid does sound familiar. The vet gave it a shot of the same stuff used on men with prostate tumurs . The first shot sensitized it and the second made it react then it died and fell of. At first I wondered what i had done to this poor horse but he cleared up and grew hair right back over it and the shoulder patch cleared up real nice. He is now giving rides to a little girl and eating his life away.
the vet said that it is a sarcoma. He also said that surgically removing them often makes them spread out, you spread the virus to the tissues that you touch with the scapel, they then grow back bigger than the original. Best way to treat them is with a caustic salve such as Indian Mud. He also said that he thought Compound W might also work, is cheaper, but he has never tried it. I have some compound W, we are in day one of this experiment. thanks for your inputs

sw, I would find a vet that knows about the product I had used on a horse with a sarcoid over the eye. I know it was made by BIONCHE, And could find out if you want me too. It took a cc/ cc of tumur but cleared it up real nice. It took 2 shots and looked ugly for a while but in the end you couldn't even see where it had been. Watch that Compound W in the eyes. :cowboy:

The product was called Regressin. The vet estimated the size of the tumor in CC's and had to give a cc per cc of tumor. in several locations . He slightlly sedated the horse so he could work on him more easily.
The first shots just sensitized the tumor to the product the in a week or so the second shots were give and the tumor reacted to the Regressin It looked bad but the tumor just kept peeling away. I know I wondered what I had gotten the poor horse into but he finally cleared up and you couldn't tell where the tumor had been.
Keep us post on the progress what ever you try, It was 5 or 6 years ago and I think the stuff cost $10/cc but it does n't take much unless it is quite big and it works. :cowboy:

I was reading this post becasue I have a horse that has a sarcoid on the inside of her leg. The sarcoid has been there for a few years. Last year it started to bleed quite a bit becasue it got so large that it rubbed against her leg and became irritated (I guess). At that time we cleaned it up and banded it (rubber bands). We also put some shriners on it. It took a while but it finally fell off but this year it's back and today it started bleeding again so we did the same thing we did last year. I would sure like to find a better way to deal with it. I was wondering the regressin worked with the horse in the post but it seemed to end without a conclusion. I was hoping that it may work for my horse also. If you have any info I'd really appreciate it. I hope this post gets read. thanks

The regresson worked fine and to the best of my knowledge it never grew back. It is best to get the advice of a vet. Ours called some horse specialist before starting . I think that it takes at least 2 shots to remove it completely. Hope this helps.

Sarcoids on horses are alot like warts everything and nothing works. I love warts because I can wave my hand over them and in 90 days they are gone. Sarcoids are a different thing, I hgave used cryo surgery, regression (and several other immuo stims) surgical removal and it does not matter until the horses immune system can beat it you are only going to control at best . However in spite of or because of my tretments I have seen some really bad one regress and disappear.

I talked to another vet after the sarcoid was gone and he said if you want them to go away faster, use a combination of surgery, regresson and Indian mud, cut part of the sarcoid off, inject with regresson and put on the mud every day and it will go away fast.
