Wendy's Hamburger Commercial

Watching TV last night, I saw a Wendy's Commercial which says its hamburgers are better because their hamburger has not been frozen. I really can't say for myself if it would be better since most of the meat I eat has been frozen. But I think it would be safer if it has been frozen. This might be a silly question but, does freezing meat kill E. coli?
 
If I'm not mistaken, FSIS's definition of 'frozen' is below 28 F. I would be willing to bet that when meat is put on the truck for shipping, it's at 28 F!!

New Zealand did a study that meat that was flash frozen and thawed slowly(in refrigerator) was no different than fresh.
 
My parents, who grew up without electricity, always said there is nothing to worry about if your meat had a hard freeze. They may have been refering to pork. I still won't eat rare pork whether it has been frozen or not. I probably grew up believing a myth, but I'll eat rare beef if I know its been frozen.

Pork has changed over the years,so one doesn't have to be as worried about pork as they used to.Freezing meat will keep bugs at bay and if cooked to 160{beef and pork} Foul{to 180d} and all the way through will kill e-coli too.

Meat can only be held at a cold{not freezing} air for so long before it starts spoiling.

It's a shame that bad management has cause this thing to invade our meat.When I was younger I ate a ton of (tiger meat),mostely in bars.It realy went well with beer :D :D :D :D :D :D
 
In Belgium and France, they serve Steak Tartar which is a pile of raw ground beef laced with raw egg and spices.

A group of us, on our first dining experience, ordered steak tartar because it looked familiar and the waiter spoke no english. Some tried to tell him to cook it well or medium, etc. but finally said bring it on.

I was the only person who ate the meal. I was a farm kid raised without electricity so the only frozen meat we had came from a locker plant in town.

It wasn't bad. The best part was watching the others get pale as I ate.

It didn't take long before we learned to read the menu!!!! :D
 
I don't know if it has anything at all to do with the meat bein frozen or not....but I don't care for Wendy's hamburgers.
Not many of these fast food places that I do care for em.

Best hamburgers to me, are the ones cooked at home on the grill......and a few from mom and pop style resturants. (cuz they taste homemade)

My uncle eats Raw hamburger.We were butchering when I was a kid and he made a hamburger patty right out of the meat grinder salt and pepper in a bun and he ate it up.I've seen him do this alot since then.
 
I would eat raw ground beef if I was the one doing the butchering - - - - eColi is present in most animals large intestines - - - it is only a health concern when cross contamination occurs.

But in today's world you can go to a store and buy meat that might be a year old and butchered half way accross the world and they might have had a spil that was not taken care of and one animals gut can infect thousands of pounds of meat that is then sent all over.

I'm sure the percentage of people affected is small but when you butcher at home you know what went on.

Two guys that I know eat it raw and it sicks me out. One ate it kinda frozen formed into a ball with some salt on it and the other ate it so the outside was just brown and the inside was still RAW ick!! One of the men is probably close to 60 and the other is in his 80's and they have lived through it. I makes me wonder is it because there hasn't been the ecoli or is it because different people react to it differently? One point to consider is both men raise their own meat and a local processor takes care of it.

I eat hamburger right out of the grinder when we grind a cow here on the ranch
 
I believe some restaurants still offer rare or whatever level of 'done' one wants hamburgers IF they grind their own beef and are very sure of their supplier.

I don't particularly fear e coli, as it seems to me to be another of those things that affect people who are less exposed to the 'real' world of nature, outdoor life and soils and content thereof.

Re. McDonalds, the burgers aren't all that bad if they will leave off the junk like ketchup (it's too sweet.....who wants a sugared hamburger????), though the real hand shaped and nicely grilled ones at JT's in Midland are among my favorites. And Wendy's is my top fast food choice when in a time crunch.

I have eaten a good hamburger or two at the Red Robin in Denver. I need to talk to those guys about trade mark infringement. :lol:
