A good calf check is great, but what's better is the guys in the sale ring say wow you got good calves, And the guy you don't know from Adam next to you buys most your heifer calves. Then grabbing a hamburger in the sale barn café while waiting for the check and everybody walks in and says good calves, OH and they only sorted the Herefords out of one lot in the ring and that was the 716LB calves.

Jody, I know exactly what you mean. It's always great to get a good price but when the buyers tell you how well they like your calves with their pocketbook you know it's a real compliment. I always get so nervous sitting watching cattle come through the ring and some not bringing what I think they should and then I get worried that mine won't be liked either. And then when mine come through the ring and they bring top or a very good price it is the most exciting thing in the world. You work all year to raise a group of calves and then in a few minutes the decision is made as to how good a job you did. I always sit next to an order buyer friend of mine and he always tells me to just calm down, mine will do fine and they always do but I'm never that sure they will.

It is fun watching sellers when their calves come through the ring. Some are quiet and poker faced, and others need a shoulder harness to hold them down in the salebarn seat. Wives can either help or hinder the situation.

One time many years ago, a rancher's calves went through late in the sale. The market wasn't very good at best, and these late-selling calves didn't sell at all well. The man's wife was upset, threw her purse into the ring, and loudly proclaimed, "You stole our calves; you'd just as well take our money, too." A hush fell over the crowd.

And the next week those calves now owned by the sale barn go thru early for a higher price to fill some order buyers order.

We've sold our calves by video, electronic auction, sale ring and privately.

A fair price privately with no commissions and less shrink compared to standing in a sale barn pen overnight usually works out for the best.

Nothing beats the adrenalin rush of your calves bringing top dollar through a ring though.

Glad your calves sold well and you were recognized Jody. :D
