Last night when i was feeding i had a cow that was gonna sluff her calf it looked like. I got out there this morning couldnt find any calf but the after birth was hanging out still. So i got her in the chute to see if that calf was still in there. Couldnt find anything so i went and talked to my dad for couple minutes to see what he thought. Got back out there in about 5 minutes or so and the cow was dead as can be in the head gate. Its a hydraulic head gate and i left it loose purposely. She was a decent older cow too. So i came to the conclusion she musta put the calf somewhere. Went back out to the lot and found 2 calves right next to eachother weighing probably 30 pounds each. I just looked on the ultrasound sheet and she was due to calve feb 20 or so. Kinda bad deal sluffing twins and then even worse me trying to help her and it just ended up killing her. When i got her in the chute there was a stinky smell I think she could have had an infection in there or something. Does anybody know what the percent is for sluffing calves. Seems like i have 1 every year out of 150 but ive never had any that were this far along.

I've learned- the hard way--never to leave a cow when shes in the headgate.... :?

Sluffing a calf is just nature's way of saving me a problem later.

I don't think there has been a year when I haven't aborted at least one in the 15 years I have had cows but my cows cross a dry creek every day to water so I am sure a slip and fall get some.

losing a calf always makes you feel as low as you can feel.......just hate that feeling,.

Sorry to hear this news, tlakota. Hopefully you've got all the bad luck out of the way early and calving will go smoothly now!

That sucks, but don't beat yourself up about it. If she didn't suffacate in the headgate it wasn't your fault, she had some other problems and she may have died out in the pen.
