Work on their slapshot-Emily's got a AAA tryout on Saturday so she's hammering pucks every night-look hows those composite sticks flex-no wonder kids can shoot!!!

Darn, looks like she won't make 10' Olympics, but she keeps that up she looks to have a future in other Olympics :D

Well she made it to the last cut but they were strong on defence this year so she got cut. Emily is pretty upset but the coaches handled it well-it's never an easy job to release an athlete. It looks good for her chances next year as a second year player-if you get a chance to watch the Lloydminister AAA Border Stars this year don't miss it they have a good group of girls-wish them all the best.

Nice picture to show the flex. I always figured that younger kids couldn't generate enough power to take advantage of even the lower flex sticks. I finally talked my 12 year old into going back to wood. Now I'll have to admit I was wrong and let him get another composite. (Or maybe I'll keep my mouth shut and save some money.)

By the way NR, my hat's off to you for being a rational hockey parent. Most of the time around here when a kid doesn't make a team I get to hear hundreds of excuses on how the coaches screwed up or it was all political.

When I took my last coaching clinic we had to write a 30 page test. One part was the whole-part -whole theory of skill development-where you break a thing like taking a slapshot into basic elements when you teach it. Is was a lot harder than i thought it would be-there's a lot of different elements to it. A bit different than 'watch me do it -now you do it' lol. With Emily we really had to work on getting her to move her bottom hand down a bit so she could get the power out of her legs and body weight-her shot is still weak but it's getting better. Ty had an 85 mile an hour slapshot when he was 13 we got the radar gun out one day at the rink. Some times the coaches make mistakes and it can be political but this time it was just a numbers thing. Steve Hughes the coach that had to make the call is a class act-he told Emily they expect her to come back and be a leader next year so that was good for her. Myself when I release players I prefer to sit down and do it face to face-I feel you owe it to the athlete. I think handing out sealed letters is pretty lame but it is easier on the coach. Emily is using a 50 flex stick just for information sake.
