Hi all. I thought I would share what I want in a dog.
--I want a buddy. He's waiting for me in the morning and in my pickup all day. I don't have to leash him or kennel him because he's in my shadow. I don't have to teach him to "heel" because he just does.
--I want a dog that knows English. If I'm working cows and in a tizzie I can't remember if "come by" means left or right.
--I want to be able to walk among my stock in safety. I don't want any feet coming over my back from the heifer who is too friendly in her heat cycle. I don't want a ram charging my butt as I get out of the fence. I don't want the buck clamboring over me to get to the feed bucket.
--I want a dog that stays with my kids and keeps them out of the road, keeps the snakes away, and lets them cross the pasture without being bothered by the mama cow.
--I want to be able to open the trailer door and the cows appear inside. I don't want to have to tell the dog to go across the creek, bring the cows up the south fence, turn left at the manure pit, and bring them through the north gate.
--When I'm gone and the cows get out, I want them put back in with the dog sitting in the gate, waiting for me to close it. (While I'm at it, I'd like a dog to remind me to chain the gate!)
--I want a dog that doesn't harass my stock. I want to go in the house, take a nap, and know that the dog is not chasing chickens or eyeing up the sheep.
--I want a dog who can herd gently and not run the finish off the steers.
--I want a dog who is tough as nails and will take the bull by the nose when he's being nasty.
--I want a dog who will tell me when someone drives up without taking the person's leg off.
--I want a dog that kills rats, moles, coons, and opossums and chases the rabbits off the pea patch.
--I want a dog that chases hawks away from the chickens.
--I want a dog that tells me when a ewe is missing when I go to put the flock in the barn at night.
Oh, wait, I have that dog! Thank goodness for my English shepherd!
