Just had a vet out for the visit. The call fee alone was over $300.00. That didnt include the inspection fee of 100.00 per animal. He ended up saying he was darn sorry he even came out and could not believe how fat my stallion is. He kept asking me if he really was a TB. Well I'm glad it's done but wow what a dent in the pocket book

Thats about right here too Judith.

They are professionals and I guess if we went to the doctor without insurance it would probably be about the same for a visit. Clearly it has been a while since the vet has paid me a visit :) I think it was 125.00 the last time I had one out .

I think our vet charges something like 30 bucks for a driveup..From that point on it depends on what they are doing. For health papers or something like that it might be 5 bucks an animal... I think if they are doing shots or something like that on a big group of animals they will charge you by the hour or they will charge a buck or two an animal.. It isn't bad usually. The labor part of my vet bills is the least of my concern.. It is the pharms that add up.

That being said we don't deal with a horse vet and that right there could be different.

I never even though to call a large animal vet. (Judith slaps self in head at moment of stupidity!!!)

For what you were doing Judith, I think the Horse vet makes more sense.....

Be carefull though on he words the stallions body condition, you might have to send him to Jenny Craig

Wonder if my vet will take an X-ray for me today...I know the vet will be cheaper than the doctor, even with insurance. Probably just soft tissue damage again... I need to start sending the hired guy into doing these things as we have insurance for him to get hurt..

Took a cow kick directly to my hand/gut.. There I was, just minding my business and this she witch went running by and did a flying kick out.. Slammed my thumb awfully good and than ended with the hoof into my gut.. Thank god for good padding there.. We were sorting off some more culls and this was one that was a temperment witch and I guess she lived up to it.. Can't wait to leave that bad memory behind when I drop her off at the barn in the AM..

Im 45 minutes from the closest vet and the other one is an hour a way. I think if I remember right they both charge around $30 to $50 for an after hours call out which I always thought was expensive. Seems like my animals always have their troubles on the weekend. The one horse vet actually lives not so far from me, so if he comes from home or if I wait till the end of the day on a working day for her to come she doesnt charge me mileage.

those small animal vets know how to milk the cat and dog lovers. We had one that switched from large to small animals after word got around that he was charging a $25 "clean up fee" to wash his boots after a farm call. I got word the other day that he charged a city dwelling friend $300.00 to do a psychological analysis on their dog. LMAO
Actually for their education large animal vets make very little compared to other professionals.

My vet has gone up to $50 for the trip now. Plus whatever work he does. But he's pretty reasonable on all of that - still just $25/hd for checking bulls.

A good vet is really priceless. Every time I hear some people talk about not even being able to get a vet to come out for any price, it makes me realize how lucky I am. I've got one that will come whenever I need him, or will set stuff outside the door for me at night. Never any questions asked about whatever I need. Priceless.

A lot of the large animal vets have switched over to small animal because it is "easy" money. Have had them flat out tell me that. there is also just not enough business anymore, with all the independant hog producers mostly gone, for them to be exlusive to large animal. The hogs used to be the bread and butter for vets around here, that and dairys which are also mostly gone... The vet office I am using said they like the large animal because it gets them out of the office. They also told me they really wouldn't want too many clients the size that I am... My file is about the size of 20 clients, lol with all of the cats, dogs and livestock that we use them for. I think we pay the mortage on the building

The thumb feels real good right about now. It was a rough night working with the horse, hard to get everything adjusted one handed, but just being able to ride for an hour was some good medicine. I'm sure it will hurt like a something tomorrow but I am about 99% sure I didn't break it.. I was about 99% sure that I did when that witch kicked me... She was in the sin pen for a reason.

$75 call out fee for our vet to come to us..it's a 25 mile drive for him. Other than that......bangs vacs and tattoo is $4.00 a head. That's about the only thing we have ever called him out for. But thinking from now on....there's another vet that has facilities onsite to do the vaccinations, it'll be cheaper for us to load the critters up and haul em in and bring em back home. Cuz I Know it don't cost $75 in diesel to get here and back.
We have had 1 after hours visit, that we went to him...took a horse in, and it was $80.

Our new horse vet...we always go to him....knock on wood, so far we haven't had to have him come to us. No Idea what his call out fee would be. Probably extremely high.

The vet I use is 45 miles away, and he charges $125 for the drive, whether its after hours or during normal hours. If he's already in the area, he'll charge me the "extra" mileage to get to my place, so if he's only a couple miles away he won't charge a dime. For mass treatments or preg-checking a decent number of animals, he'll skip the mileage charge, whether he's in the area or not.

The local vet, who I desperately try not to use, charges $2/mile no matter when or what or how many animals he's doing.

The nearest vet to us, is down at Arenas Valley, just the other side of Silver City, so we're talking about 120 miles from here. If you can wait till he comes up, he does a circle around every couple of weeks. I think he tacks a little on to your bill, and you have to meet him at the Fairgrounds over at Reserve (21 miles from here) but I don't think it's very much.
If you can't wait, then you just have to haul to him, he stays way too busy to drop everything and come a-runnin' when ya holler...
He's the same vet that takes 3 days out of his schedule, and does pet vaccination clinics that the county's 4-H clubs sponsor, every April.......he's one heck of a good guy, in my opinion. Maybe that's why he stays so dadgum busy all the time! :D

12 years ago I had my two siamese cats fixed One male one female and the cost to me was 50 bucks a peice. 8 years before that it was 35.

Jump to 2006 and the cost of the actual neutering is about the same 35 to 50 bucks depending on the sex being done, BUT this time they have a string of additional charges.... exam, pre- anesthsesia shot, hospital fee, kennel fee, antibiotic injection, supplies, anesthesia, etc etc etc. A whole page of add-ons and the final cost for the two of them was $450.00

OUCH!

Other then that it costs $175 bucks for him to drive out here which he does twice a year to preg check and semen test and then a fee for each service he does. Its cheaper for me to preg check 65 cows then have two young cats fixed. Than heavens... I think.

Since we went all organic we haven't had but one vet call. One of our registered bulls had a really bad case of pinkeye. $65.00 plus medicine.
Back when we were in Dairy our monthly herd health checks were $85.00
per hour.
