We have had a problem with our dogs chasing cars. The dogs are mainly the kid's dogs and have a little of it in their breed. One is border collie and the other is just a mutt. The border collie can be real good when working with the cattle, but it is more of a kid's dog than a working dog. Of course the mutt is just that; a sympathy case and does not partake as much. Another problem we have with them is that they want to herd people who may be walking down the road. I guess part of that is the territorial thing. The border collie does spend a lot of time laying down and eying the horses. The horses are pretty used to it so we don't really have a problem there. I hate to pen the dogs up because they are the kid's dogs and they don't bother the cats any.
We had a black lab we inherited from another rancher and he did the same thing. It was pretty bad. My wife ended up hitting him accidentally and it was quite a deal for the kids--and my wife.
If any of you have any suggestions, please advise. Most of the training would have to be done by my kids as they are around them all the time. I simply don't have the time. If our border collie was a strict working dog, I would have her penned up but that won't go over with the kids who like to play soccer with the dog. The dogs are also pretty good at catching moles---another reason for not penning. It is pretty entertaining to watch them and they are pretty successful.
Usually, by the time we notice it, the dogs are already barking down the road at a car so it is hard to anticipate it happening.
