On June 9th, Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns hosted a BSE Roundtable in St. Paul. A day later, it was announced a BSE sample was being sent to England for further testing. Johanns now admits he knew the samples were being retested when the Roundtable got underway. "Just before I walked into that Roundtable, I was alerted that some kind of testing was going on and that was the extent of my information at that point," said Johanns, "Once I did have the information and the final test results were back Friday evening; literally, within a couple minutes, I was speaking publicly about what I knew." Johanns says it would have been premature to talk about the retest before he had all the details.
