This was on the MSNBC website when I logged on t my computer this morning. They give no details on how conclusive or detailed the study was.

Eat a lot of beef? It may affect your son's sperm
Study links chowing on red meat in pregnancy to peculiar long-term effect

Updated: 5:02 p.m. MT March 27, 2007
WASHINGTON - U.S. women who eat a lot of beef while pregnant give birth to sons who grow up to have low sperm counts, researchers reported Tuesday.

They believe pesticides, hormones or contaminants in cattle feed may be to blame. Chemicals can build up in the fat of animals that eat contaminated feed or grass, and cattle are routinely given hormones to boost their growth.

"In sons of 'high beef consumers' (more than seven beef meals a week), sperm concentration was 24.3 percent lower," the researchers wrote in their report, published in the journal Human Reproduction.

Must be the reason I could only sire 3 kids in a 11 month period  - just think what could have happened if I hadn't ate so much beef all my life...    :P

And yes it was with the same woman-- #1 came and 11 months later the twins were here....

Ok, OT...you can wipe that grin off your face now!!!!

But there may be some truth to this fact. Not just hanging the blame on beef but on ALL things we eat. A college friend of mine is one of those brainy researchers @ a bio lab and they have been doing studies on 'additives' in food and the effects/affects on people for years.

Seems that kids are maturing earlier, puberty, at about 2 years earlier than they were roughly 20 yrs ago. The levels of hormones, chemicals, etc in their systems are generally high and that seems to be the only trigger they can find.

If you think about it....in the larger picture of things it probably has made some changes in all of use no matter if we eat meat or not.

And I've heard the high estrogen level of soy causes testicles to shrivel and boys to get boobs...

So if I have my druthers- I'd druther have a beef burger over a soy burger...

Altho I do oppose all this pumping of implants, drugs and antibiotics into cattle and livestock....Just ain't needed...Prices should be high enough that you can profit without doing all that...

Yep soy is used as a estrogen replacement for women going thru menopause....this was found out after that scare a few years ago about the hormone replacement pills they were taking. Seems soy is a natural estrogen.

BUT....you don't see Japanses men with boobs and they eat soy/soy products by the tons...wonder what makes the difference?

I must admit...some soy burgers are really good! Others are like sawdust!

This aint got didly squat to do with eatin beef or not eatin beef, but they say the bicycle riders...you know the ones...that wear spandex and cruise in mass groups along our roadways....well the tiny seat those fellas are sittin on affects their fertility too......so....what if a bunch of these young boys they are testing rode bicycles with itty bitty seats all their lives???? Did they take that into count?

They soy affect suppossedly has something to do with the type of soy you are consuming... Soy oil and extruded soy protein is supposedly problematic, fermented soy hs less of an affect (True or not, this is one theory I read recently)... As far as estrogen from implants in steers causing it, well, there is more estrogen (phytoestrogen mind you) in a baked potato than in a 8 ounce steak... I would imagine that the overweight boys with man boobs probably has more to do with too much sugar/HFCS, too much TV and not enough activety.

But the question to ask is if the estrogen belongs in that steak? In other words, would it occur naturally? Our bodies have evolved over the years to utilize what Mother Nature provides for us. As soon as we start goofing around with the natural balance in our food, we're changing what our bodies have adapted to over hundreds of thousands of years. Will we adapt? Certainly, but our bodies can't adapt fast enough to keep pace with technological change. I firmly believe that all this implant and theurapeutic antibiotic use is going to slowly kill us all. Or mutate us into something completely unrecognizable.

Rod, I don't think we should implant beef.... I also don't think we should feed subtheraputic levels of antibiotics to them.. I know, I know.. the ecomics of feeding a steer but nothing will ever convice me that it is a good practice for our long term health.. It was just to show the, well in my mind, levels of estrogens we are consuming regardless of source...

We probably shouldn't be eating extruded soy protein in "power bars" or high fructose corn syrup in everything either. Chicken and Pork feed.. don't get me started..

That is a very good point. The levels of antibiotics and hormones pumped into our food supply, not just beef, is ridiculous.

In the future I see a bigger and bigger market for natural beef, both grass raised and corn-fed.

As a cattleman, I do not implant and only give antibiotics as a last resort. I try to eliminate the problems the "Lasiter Way". If a calf gets sick his mom gets sold that fall.

Maybe if all these "government workers", you know, the folks that the government pays to shack up in apartment complexes and make babies, were required by law to all eat a meal of beef just once a day the benefits would be twofold. Demand for beef would go up, which would benefit the beef producer, and the number of new mouths that us, the over taxed over worked American taxpayer would have to feed would go down, thus benefiting everyone in this who busts it every day just trying to feed his/her family and have a little extra. What a great idea, do you think that we could get CONgress to pass legislation that will make it happen? I won't hold my breath waiting on it though!!! Clay

Maybe if the American Farmer/Rancher would get off the government titty then you'd have a point but as long as farmers and ranchers keep bellying up to the trough for a goverment handout, I'd just keep quiet about others. CRP, Loan Deficiency payments, counter cyclical payments, drought relief, government subsidized crop insurance all just another name for WELFARE.

GET OFF THE TIT!!!

NTS ---> Never taken a government payment, never will!!!

Nortexsuck, I hate to be the one to break the news to you but you aren't the only rancher in the world who doesn't grab for the government money. I may be alot of things but a hypocrite is not one of them. Like you, the government hand outs haven't built my operation either. I wouldn't criticize welfare if I were on it too. I made my post tongue in cheek, but obviously you didn't see any humor in it. I hope your afternoon gets better now that we have clarified this. Have a good one, Clay

Glad to hear it. We need more like you. You will note I never called you out by name. I said the 'American Farmer/Rancher'. And in general the statement is true. There are a lot of hypocrites in farming and ranching.

Jigs, OT didn't want to watse a "SEMI-PRIVATE" Room.

Then she wouldn't let me near her for 8 years- thats when #4 came along.....

Oldtimer, you missed the point. It ain't got nothin to do with what you ate, it's what your momma ate while she was carrying you. Was she a vegetarian or a chicken rancher??? Or maybe she ate beef imported from Canada!! :) :-)

Don't get shook now, I'm just razzin' you.
