Which option??

I get a steer from dad every year instead of wages for my extra work during harvest, and for calving out all of the cows for him. Should I get a heifer from him (his idea) and buy a steer, or get a steer from him and buy a heifer from somewhere else. Dad has great breeding stock, but the teers dont win any shows.

Whats your opinion?

Pretty easy decision according to your evaluation. Dads stock is great breeding stock (heifer) but steers can't win. Get the heifer and buy a steer.

I'd take the heifer if you get to pick you should find a good one plus she will have calves in years to come,the steer's life is'nt as productive,myself I would show the heifer nothing else do a GREAT job on one animal instead of an average job on a couple.I would start building a herd for your future now even if you end up selling them later to go to college or buying your first house whatever you do keep your debt low.

Well, we got the cattle home from the community pasture, and im going to get my steer from dad, an buy a heifer aswell. I'll post sime pics this afternoon on a poll cause im stuck between a few heifers and three steers. lol.
