Please dont make this politcal. I was talking with shoer and he asked me this question and I had one keep coming into mind.
I was wondering what yall thought.
Who and why you feel they are the greatest?
There are NO wrong answers this is not to be a debate just sharing some cool history with each other.

George Washington. He didn't take a salary when elected President, he could have been made a King, but he said he was just the President.

How about you post the greatest Canadian General, I honestly couldn't tell you a single one but would imagine there must have been some good ones.

I like Ike...Not only for his ability to do tactics and logistics but his ability to designate authority to folks that could-- while handling a very shakey political makeup of the allies- and the allied commanders infighting and differing beliefs.....

Robert E. Lee (I'm biased)

I don't care for Eisenhower, Patton or McArthur due to their willingness to totally disregard the Constitution by attacking American citizens, i.e., "Bonus Army".

I will only do this as you are the author of the thread and have asked me to - I do not want this to seem like a hijack.

I have several that I think are historically important - from earliest to most modern:

General Wolfe - actually a Brit who beat those dastardly French on the Plains of Abraham to make then Lower Canada an English Colony

General Brock - another Brit who prevented you guys from making us Americans by kicking some US ash in 1812. :D

General Currie - a bred and born Canuck - who led the Canadians up Vimy Ridge in WW1

Major-General B.M. Hoffmeister - led the Canadians in Sicily and at Juno Beach - liberated Holland

General Hillier - recently put the bounce back in the Canadian soldiers step - called the Taliban "Scum" and told the politicians to "Put up or shut up" - the papers loved him for his quotable quotes and anyone who was elected feared his no nonsense approach - the troops basically worshipped him - we still call him Ranger Rick

As it all comes down to beating the French and being here today I would suppose the final honour would have to go to Wolfe - hands down. The others did their job with distinction, but Wolfe created a country.

Cheers

Well since I am the author LOL let me tell you I dont feel this is a hijack.
The only problem I have NOW is I have to find out more about who you posted. Maybe I should have said General of the country you live in or call Home.

Oops! Apologies.

I am a nice guy but it is almost 0130 and I will tuck my tail between my legs and run off to bed soon.

I take the chastizing with a smile as I am innocent of all things bad tonight.

Honest - I will learn to read someday. I promise.

Ben - you old dog - see what kind of trouble you got me into?

Take care all

BC I am sure there are a few on here who call you thier favorite Captian.

I read some about Wolfe and it kept saying he was known for his training reforms but I couldnt find anythignabout the reforms he started let alone any of the training he was in charge of......

As for my Favorite ....
Washington. He had so much to lose if he did not succeed. He would have been put on trial as a traitor and this country would never have begun.

I just finished reading a 'Civil War for Dummies' and 'Canadian History for Dummies' they actually made more sense than the history text at school. I'd have to say from all the books I read about the civil war that Stonewall Jackson was probably the greatest general tactics wise and as far as inspiring faith in his actions-the deal was pretty much done for the confederacy when they lost him. currie established Canada as a stand alone army with Vimy ridge-we gained more ground in hours than the rest had in months-the 'rolling barrage was used for the first time that day. We can't forget Gabrial Dumont he whipped the government tropps several times and would of made the rebellion alot longer if Riel wouldn't of held him back. My pick for the greatest general of all time-Hannibal-he totally destroyed three Roman armies by changing battle tactics every time.
