Ive been in a lot of pain for a week now and got into the doctor yesterday and i have shingles. Im 20 years old and i dont know how the heck i caught them. Im gonna be calving here anytime so it could be interesting. Im sure glad my dad talked me into going to te doctor and i think i got on some medication early enough. This is some nasty crap...Who elses has gone through it
 
It's caused by the same virus as the chicken pox. Anyone can get them at any time in their life. But most of the time I think it's due to a suppressed immune system along with being exposed. You might ask your doctor if you should be taking somethin to boost your immune system as well.

My dad went thru this shortly after loosing my mom.

And my father in law went thru having shingles, when he started his chemo (the type he's on makes the immune system almost nill).

Very painful, do what your doctor says, and keep us posted on how your comin along. We will keep you in our prayers.
 
Chicken Pocks -> Singles
V_Key had Singles around 17 also _ Doctor said it MIGHT be from the Divorce and meds helped a lot (4 years after)

Singles is mostly in us old folks _ I got a Singles Vac. about a month ago.
Doctors do not recommend it for V_Key (To Young)

They have a vaccination shot- which the doctors are now advising anyone over 60 (especially if you ever had chicken pox) or with a lowered immune system should get...Problem is they are pricey-- Several hundred dollars for the shot and many health insurance plans do not cover them- nor would medicare- altho they were trying to figure out a way to....

Most insurance does cover it as of lately. 20, that's awfully young .


Once it clears up....you can then get the shot but they won't give it to you with active shingles.

There is a drug called Lyrica, it's for nerve pain, and some have used that for the pain with some relief. Maybe ask your Dr about that one.

You may be right as this was a couple of years ago when I was checking- and the shot cost $650--but I've heard thats came down some too..

I took the shot last yr , due to a pending overseas trip, as a 'just in case' issue as I had had a case of the chicken pox later than most kids... & my ins covered the whole deal.
 
thats weird cause i just got back from mexico about 10 days ago...i havent been sick at all for 2 years...not even a common cold....and then this flares up all of a sudden

Travel itself is not a trigger....but stress can set it off sometimes.

Or it could just fall into that universal category of " shite happens" also!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

I'm just one of those people that takes ALL shots when I travel abroad cause I tend to go to those freaky places on the planet at times where help is hard to get or not the best.
 
Bummer, hope you have a speedy recovery. My wife's BIL, very active guy, works for UPS, stock car driver, musician, got them a few years ago. They got bad, ended up in his eyes, and took many months to recover.

Take care of yourself, let somebody else handle the tough jobs, do what the Doc says.
 
I got shingles a few years ago, age about 64 at the time. Blame it totally on stress and didn't even realize what it was, believing it from chronic back problems and additional hard work of helping my 'other half' get around during a back injury. We fit in an emergency back surgery during the week prior to Easter.....with all the family gathering at our house.....so there was additional stress.

Surgery went well, he went into hosp in a wheel chair and walked out five hours later with instructions from doc to go out and have a great dinner!

Easter got properly celebrated, and the next day, I went to the doc myself, being in easily the worst pain of my life. That considers that I had 4 babies with minimal anesthesia back in the '60s, have had a double mastectomy and associated tests and chemo, and a broken tail bone....3 TIMES! I do know what pain is!

From what I've heard from others, I had a relatively mild case and the meds handled it rather quickly. But I do have flare-ups of the pain whenever life gets stressful, sometimes when I haven't really realized it was catching up with me.

I've been told I should get the shot and will do so soon. Not sure if our ins. will pay anything or not, but Medicine Shoppe and even some grocery store pharmacies in Rapid City have a better buy on it than our clinic and the clinic recommends getting the stuff elsewhere because it costs them so much they don't keep it on hand.

There are occasional notices in the Rapid City Journal seeking people to participate in a study of Shingles if you have had the stuff. That may be worth looking in to as it seems logical your young age would make you a more "interesting" case than some.

Have heard of one guy who got it in his eye and was extremely ill. His comment was that when he got to the Pearly Gates, he would tell St. Peter he had already done his time in Hell, as he had Shingles in his eye! He retained a sense of humor, in spite of the suffering.

Good luck with your medicine and a quick and complete recovery. And with help wih the calving and easy season of it to keep stress to a minimum. Has the doc suggested some good vitamins to help with the immune system? Might be worth asking about.

My poor mother is 94 and has been suffering with shingles for 4 or 5 years. Can't get much relief with anything. This is a reminder that I must get the shot. If you knew anyone who has suffered as much as my mom you would get the shot at any price.

That kinda sounds like my SIL who is just now recovering from Bell's palsy which is also virus linked. I wonder if there is any connection.

Probably not between my mother and your SIL but I think between the shingles and Bell's palsy there is.

I got mine at the Safeway Stores Pharmacy through Med-a-Cal for Free.

With out Insurance they said the shot would cost $250
