Why do we educate?

I'm in a very interesting discussion on another forum about education. Some folk are for it some against. i'm of the though process that you can never learn enough and that continuing to think outside of your comfort zone is good for you. ALthough I still don't think we need math :x Can't we keep track of stuff with rock formations or something, It would be alot easier :) Love to hear you thoughts for or against
 
I am all for education. But I think the education system in this country is in a mess.

Around here, the best education comes through the parochial school systems, seems like. But they have an advantage, they MAKE the parents stay involved! :wink:

As for continuing ed, if you quit learning, you might as well roll over and die.

Read, read, read and then read some more. Second best way to learn.

Why do people not realize that there are library's and the internet and that there is a lot of info about everything out there and all they need to do is check it out? :???:

I am radical. I think the best way to learn is "hands on" with a mentor. After all, it's the cowboy way. :D
 
They can't teach you in college what you will really to know in life --but the way the world is structured, you will get a head start in life to learn what you really need to know if you have a degree first --

Sad but true.

Get the paper --then go back to the trenches. They can't take that away from you.

I was talkin' to a vetrinarian one day and I asked him what they taught him about castration in vet school. His face screwed up in disgust and he told me, "They never taught me anything useful in vet school and nothing about casteration." :o

I've met way too many overeducated idiots, to put too much faith in colleges.

Seems like there are way more than average in all our Capitols. :wink:
 
My point exactly --- I had this conversation with two large animal vets the other day --- they had to take special classes to learn ANYTHING about vet work on a cow or horse -- and not all those electives were offered.
These were both ranch kids --so the degree made them legit --their upbringing made them good at what they do.
 
i am all for furthering your education
but i think like jb "hands on" is the best way
but as julie said without that paper alot of doors are shut for you
i know this is where i'm at
i don't have a deggree and i have been working in this industry for about 15 years and the best i can hope for is to be a ranch forman or cowboss some place and the sad thing is that i know more about ranching and the bussiness than some of the managers i have worked for

while we are bashing the veternarian's here's a funny story
when i was about 17 i was day working down at college staion
we were workin cows one fall and i was mouthin them nothing big just broke mouth or gummers we were taking out
well i was getting hot and tierd so this vet student said he would spell me
now this guy was in his 3rd year of vet school
he opens the first cows mouth and say's "shes a gummer she doesn't have any top teeth"
i about fell out and then i was asked to go back to mothin them
until later

:shock: I am soooo scared..I totally agree with you,down to not needing math. I love to learn new things,I think if people keep educating themselves they never stagnate. I also believe that expierence means alot,but one can always learn something they don't know.Education is one of the most important things there is IMHO
 
I think the best reason for education is it teaches one how to learn.Most professions require a practicum or internship before a title can be claimed.There are test to pass and skills to learn which are noted and applied with-in the educational system.Math is an important part of life, more than people even realize.How would you know if you got the right change back from the store clerk without the concept off addition and subtraction?filling up a dirt bike or chainsaw you need to understand mixture ratios.Math is the truest form of logic.Math is a global language.if you can not understand simple math,life would be impossible to get through on one's own.
 
NN,the math thing was a joke...I'm talking for Judith too but I think her and I don't love math,it was a tongue in cheek thingy :D
 
Education isn't worth 15cents to me. If you know something , I'll pay you but just because you've been to the class doesn't mean you know anything. If I was getting a set of heifers bred for example, I don't want the person with a diploma, I want the man that knows what a cervix feels like and can manipulate the gun. Someone running a dozer, I don't want the vo-tech paper, I want a man that can keep the blade doing the right thing. I don't want the person who's been to cooking school, I want the woman that can sling hash out of what's in the refrigerator. Some things are teachable but not many. It usually takes a hand on the plow.
 
i am all for it,in fact i think we need more of it,we need to get back to more education in the schools,i know in the school here they are getting to much sports going on,i am for sports but there has to be a limit,the kids cant do homework cause they are not home,gone to a sporting event, and with the budget cuts the school would rather cut educational programs rather then sports,i like sports just as much as anyone but i think we need to have prioreties,also they are finding that learning later in life helps warding off alzheimers,the mind needs to keep learning

Yes sweetie but what about Dr.s Nurses,teachers...don't you want them to be educated enough and more to deal with your family?? Theres things people HAVE to have education for.I also believe these people your talking about have educated themselves to be the best man for the job you want done.
 
Hmmm. I dare to say you are wrong because I know generally that you're right. We have a midwife that has delivered babies for us that is way , way brighter than a Dr. though. She is very specialized I realize. My point is that because you have an education, doesn't prove to me that you know anything. By education I am meaning formal education but there are also those that have hands on experience that still don't know anything. I know lots of cattlemen that after many years in the business still can't pic a good bull from a sorry one. Just because you are educated or trained doesn't make you know anything. Dr.s are a prime example. I know a bunch of them and have a few for friends yet there are only one or two I trust. Generally a good nurse knows more than most Dr.s because they are actually around the patients longer and get a feel for them. Too many professionals in any field rely on the sheepskin as their claim to fame. I say prove you know something and I'll pay. By the word you in the above statement I don't mean you personally Mrs. Greg.
 
Yes and I guess I didn't make my self clear enough either...I don't nessasarly think just because one went to higher education that they are better educated then those that didn't,reading,watching others,doing,even making mistakes all educates people.

You mean if Judith had better math skills, she would have known her head would fit thru the banister rails one way, but would NOT come out???? Geeze what a mental vision I'm havin....Judith stuck there, with a pencil and paper, with all sortsa measurements and math figures on it....and that look in her face :???:

Judith would still have gotten stuck , even with superior math skills. She is a very determined person and those cobwebs had to go :) However you will be happy to know she did learn from her mistake, and now puts a sock on the end of a broom to clean webs :)


PS I still dont think we need math :P

Totally agree-but why then when I am sittin' on fence givin' orders to pups(kids) while branding etc. ,the wife calls me bossy and lazy? Just schoolin' the pup's I say.
