Winter grazing-Fraser's

Dylan and i spent the afternoon at Fraser's-there about 300 four year old and up cows out grazing russian wild rye and alfalfa pasture. Here's a bunch heading back out from water.

Really? I don't see that much to commend either of the hereford cows from in the pictures other than they are real world cows out grazing for a living. Tell me what the good points are that I'm missing as I'm not that versed on hereford cattle.
 
There nice enough cows nothing special that I can see. I don't quite understand your infatuation with other people's cows's and the work to get them. Maybe if you were'nt so light in the harness you could just go take pictures of your own. I can see if we had exposed grass here in winter we could graze it we don't so we can't. As many ventures you have stated you've been in I wonder if the first thing you should have done was pick a direction and stayed the course. I know I sound like a prick but I could'nt or WOULD'nt justify wasteing all the time and milage persueing the optimum cow.It take's a lifetime to build up a good cowherd and one generation to mess it up. You seem more like a cattle jockey than a Rancher anyhow. The guys here who always touted buy all your hay your an idiot to make. Most of them are either sold out or making their own hay. If I ran around the country hunting for whatever ,deer elk,moose,cows,bulls hockey,or rodeos I'd be divorced 1st and broke 2nd. Your wife needs a big hug she must be the most kind and understanding women on earth.

I think true cattlemen will appreciate these cows as for know it all foreigners and sour puss welders from Minnesota I don't value their opinions all that much. I'm sourcing genetics to to market semen on next year-don't know how to do it without l.ooking. I guess if your a bad man for visiting friends and enjoying their cattle shoot me in the guts.
 
Jeepers guys, lighten up. I enjoy the excursions and stories. It does not cost me a thing to go see these herds and rodeo's and hockey. What it costs NR and what his motives are not that important when push comes to shove. Thanks for the virtual tour, NR.

The first Hereford cow, 20P's dam - She just isn't loaded with fat. Otherwise, she is structurally a very solid cow. Lots of barrel, chest and hip. Feminine-looking. Good feet and legs. Has some length. Not exceptionally long, but not short either. Can't see even a tit at this angle, so she has to be strong in the udder and teat department. And even a little pigment. All this and looking after herself so far this winter? She is my type of cow.

Whats your definition of a true cattlemen. That is what I'd like to know. Someone who's still living on daddies place without adding a damn thing to it in a generation? I've seen plenty of those the old folks worked hard and the next generation pissed it all away. Good luck in your highway ventures.
 
But she's not a Luing AAron lol. I think she is a 'G'. I guess if grazing out all winter in south central Alberta was just a matter of having exposed grass there'd be a lot more guys doing it. The selection to find the type of cow that graze and thrive in that enviroment takes a long time. Love them or hate them but appreciate what it took to make them.
 
Grassfarmer a good cow is a good cow the same traits that make a good range cow are common to all breeds. Denny just keep on sharing the love and enjoy your fantasies in the land of stereotypes.
 
Defination of a """REAL""" cattlemen you throw the phrase around like Kit Pharo but do damn little to justify it's use or definition. Lets here The guru from Canadas definition.
 
A real cattleman owns a welding shop in Minnesota,runs Luings in rRimbey,Alberta, Herefords in Ontario or Brafords in Texas. The one trait they all have in common is a love of what they're doing and a desire to make their living at it. The paths they take to achieve it shouldn't bother or concern others. You don't criticize another cattleman's lifestyle till you've walked a mile in his boots.

Well thanks I don't mean to critize I just get the feeling from you that if we don't do it your way were wrong and were not. Everything changes as you drive out the gate.I apologize if I ruffled your feathers.
