Winter grazing with pictures

OK, I finally figured out the photos - here are a few pictures of our Luing cows grazing banked perennial pasture through the recent cold snap. We have had only 1 day in the last month above -10C, not many above -20C and many were high -30s with windchill. Cows grazing through around 8 inches of snow, licking snow for water and doing just fine.

MRR 3M a six year old Luing cow (223U daughter). This pasture is pretty well all eaten.

Almost identical profile to her daughter - old 223U grazing under the same conditions at 22 years old!

45P - A young cow off the Lochay line and very much the body type we look for.

Even the bred heifers were grazing until Christmas.

Onto a new pasture. Trailed them 2.5 miles in -37C windchill last week but the cows are enjoying the change. Hope you enjoyed the pictures.
 
Not sure what the deal is GF but the photo's have been moved or deleted at least on my screen. Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing them.
 
wow that old Dolly looks pretty good for her age! what would be an average mature height and weight? to be honest I've never heard of the breed...thanks for sharing :-)
 
Nice thick, big capacity cows-- the kind I like...That 45P is definitely nice- not all legs like some of the bigger, better, faster racehorse type...
 
:) Great pics.I googled Luing cattle,interesting history.They look like they've adapted well to the Canadian winter.I maybe missed your info. but did you import them from the UK?How long have you had them here?Thx Mairi

My daughter lives not far from you at Sylvan Lake and my son spent most of a year trucking oil all around you.

Back in the 70's from Olds north seemed to get a lot more snow then you have been getting lately.
 
Yanuck they are a smaller framed breed - The old cow is about 1260lbs in summer condition as is the 45P cow. We have 1300lb+ cows too which I feel are too big. We are using a frame score 4 bull out of that old cow - he is just a barrel on legs and full of character.
Mrs Greg, We haven't been able to import since BSE in the UK, these are cows that descend from imports in the 1970s. I had Luings in Scotland prior to moving here - it'll be 20 years since I first bought some to replace our Galloways.

My mom was from Aberdeen,Scotland. I welcome you to ranchers and Alberta,looks to me your bringing some great new cattle knowledge to the forum!
 
I really like the body-type and fleshing ability of your cattle... not to mention the longevity. I look forward to learning more about your operation :D .

Cows are looking real good. That first one is my favorite. Heifers look darn good too.
 
GF the pics showed up. Well fleshed deep bodied cows out grazing at -37. Doesn't get any better than that.
