Storm is past us now....Ended up with about 8 inches of snow- but the 40mph winds have that mostly in drifts...
Temps dropped all night-- was 1 Below at 6 AM- 14 Below at 8AM....

Predicting 3-4 cold days-- then temps back near 30 by mid week....

Only in MONTANA.

A couple mornings ago it was 20 Below- Now this afternoon we
have 40 degree temps and west winds gusting to near 50....

And all that 8 inches of new snow we got will be a skating rink
where its packed down- and rock hard drifts where it isn't....

That wind we had here was brutal. Roads were first snow packed then just icy, last night they were black ice and today was the first day I drove home not in 4 wheel drive!

Yeah I'm back to wearing my studded sorels... Wednesday we got snain- and Chinook winds of up to 50 mph with temps up around 40--never froze Wed. night and yesterday it was again near 40 altho we didn't have the winds... A lot of our snow has settled but its like a skating rink on top...

Weather boys are predicting a couple more days in the 30's-- than cold for the weekend with the temp dropping down to 20 Below by the Sunday night.. But luckily that's supposed to be short lasting and temps back around 30 by mid next week...
Been a weird winter- but I'm not going to b*tch as its been a easy one so far...
Sure been easy on hay stacks- altho the snow and ice has limited most grazing...I was just doing some arithmetic- and best I can figure these cows are getting about 15-18lbs a day of grass/alfalfa hay and about 10 lbs of wheat straw a day-picking the rest- and are doing pretty good.... Them 20 below days I did roll them out some extra Kochia I have left to give them some more filler/protein...

Ya, and in other places it can REALLY change

I came home a few nights ago it was -30C, but the wind was picking up out of the SW. I woke up to the sound of water running off the roof. It was +8C at 4:45 am (not sure but I think that's about 48F or so?).
Of course, it did about the opposite yesterday :(

Yep-- here is the predicted windchills for tomorrow morning... This will give the southerners working the Bakken their first test of developing character or running for home...
Altho we've had a real easy winter- and its supposed to be back near 30 on Tuesday .... Its when it stays 20-30 Below for a month that gets me...

Like an old friend of mine commented on FB "Three things about that cold. You never get bitten by a mosquito, you don't have to buy much ice to keep the beer cold, and very few Californians move here. Life is good. "

was working for an okie toolpusher about 30 yrs ago.

he told me about having a lousiana derrick hand, been there all summer, good hand, drilling northern montana

first "blue northener" of the season was in progress, they were about half way back in the hole on a bit trip

derrick hand yelled he was coming down, came scooting down the ladder and headed for doghouse stairs

toolie--who was drilling then--"where you going?"

"to get my coat"

"where is it?"

"new orleans!!"

got in his outfit and left--

Had to get plowed out by the road crew after all that wind!
son almost tore his truck apart trying to get out to get to the bus.

Had a little snow today just enough to dust the ground.

It probably should start warming up as this heads east...We were down to about 12 Below at 7PM last night-- but it warmed all during the night- and we are 1 above now...
The nice thing is NO wind this morning...
