I just read a report on the poor growing conditions on large areas of Kansas and Texas. With the Glacier melting here I am finalizing plans for my rotation and was considering wheat. Is the ww crop down south as bad as the reports. Jigs?

U got a Per-mit book?
As a matter of fact I am going into year #11 without a permit book. A shortage of winter wheat means a shortage of HRS wheat means grading will be easier making room for CPS wheat to fill the feed market void. No book necessary. The other option is rye which I can market across boarder or barley which I will have plenty of already. Canola requires a 50 bus crop to break even as well it is hard to get if it is not already booked. Peas are an option but not my favorite crop to grow.

I was just trying to get a rise out of you this morning. :D

I thought you were getting a little to mellow and needed a little stirring.

Am I being a bad person if I am hoping for the price of wheat to increase?
To get the price of wheat up there has to be droughts or other disasters in the world.
So when I am hoping for the price to go up, I inturn am hoping for droughts.
Sorry I guess you guys in the south getting dried out can blame an old Coyote for your troubles.

Coyote if you are in charge of the weather then you would be that bad person. Being as you are just using the weather and market signals to run your business in a profitable manner I am going to say you are OK. For sure we have to make hay while the sun is shining because in this very risky business we can be on the losing side as well. That is called balancing out. I too don't like that some are droughted out but neither am I in charge of the weather.

you got to look long and hard to find some good looking wheat. buddies in sw kansas said the wheat is a total failure. and these are some optimistic guys !

I have none out this year, but the guy I farm with does...looks sorry, but should make a crop./...

That would be a narrow definition of ranching Pertnear. My operation focuses on Cattle but certainly is not limited to livestock. Grain residues are a large part of why my cattle operation is a profitable enterprise. If you go to Political bull or some of the other sections on here you will find out that Ranchers have a wide and varied suite of interests.

all your eggs in one basket is not the wisest move... in years that I lose money on cattle, I make a killing on alfalfa and grain...
