Winter wheat

I run a cow calf operation. I also raise alfalfa, corn, milo, wheat, and beans. the alfalfa is primarily a cash crop, I buy a lot of the neighbors hay to resell and pad my bottom line. the corn I put in silage, or grind it to feed with poorer hay, the milo is cashed out then i bale the stalks to feed the cows and bedding. the wheat is cut, then the straw baled for bedding. after the wheat is done, cheat grass takes over...excellent cow grazing with no input costs.

all in all, I am probably more farmer than rancher, but my farming is done with the interests of how it can best fit into the cows....

I never understood the whole farmer / rancher battle...we are all in agriculture production....

hell my neighbors think I am nuts for taking out 40 acres of irrigated corn ground and planting Eastern Gamma Grass.....but when I run 70 pair on 60 acres, I will be the last one smiling!

So what percent of the proceedes come from ranching?

It might be easier to rope an antelope than answer that. So what is the price of cattle, wheat, corn and hay etc. That percentage bounces all over the place is the best answer I can give you.

are you really that ignorant? I was trying to point out that to label a guy as one or the other is foolish, because the two are intertwined greatly. after a crappy day farming, I like a few cold beers and driving the pastures to check cows...it is a relaxing calm feeling.

labeling me is not gonna work, one day, I cowboy, the next i farm, then a day of truck driving, or a day of hay buyer....diversification is the key. you should try different things, like looking at the world with your head out of your arse for a change.

Is there a chance that if you a francer uncle is writing your check weather or not you raise a crop or not .every one is a rancher if they have livestock. And farm a little for spending money ! True or false

Pertnear - - - - I swear you seem to act like my wife - - - wants to fight about everything.

If I could I would just block your post - - - now use your head for something other than a hat rack and read the post of people who are trying to better themselves by learning about how things are done in other places and trying to adopt the best practices. When you have something productive to share feel free but if you just want to fight find another place to do so.

The winter wheat crop in my area is looking pretty sorry also. We just broke out 160 acres of crp grass and its looking ok but sure needs a drink but if it doesnt rain soon its going to be bad. If you can grow some the price is going to be sky high.

Tell the truth?

Nobody could make heads nor tails out of the post before this one.

Many operations that have cattle also "farm" some ground. Some of it is produced for sale but many grow some annual crops to help out the feed situation for the live stock and some because it is a better use of their resources. Some grow corn for grain and silage to background and finish their own production as well as boughten stock.

Altho I am no expert on who in the USA receives subsidies.

Do you get a check from Uncle Sam?

Tell the truth now.

NO if I did I would be asking what the wheat crop looked like down south . And telling folks I was hoping it was dry in the wheat belt so I could get the gov to pay me not to raise wheat . Do you?
