Advice needed from my northern neighbors who do this.

Son says he saw some wolves in our northern pasture on saturday. Yes he knows the difference between a wolf and a coyote.

Went out yesterday afternoon and at the gate leading to our summer pasture found a pile canine poop full of hair the same color as our Herefords.
Went out again today. We are missing a steer calf and I could not find one cow.
the herd is hanging out on the eastern part of the pasture and refusing to go past the stock tank.
Found another pile of poop that looked like tar, but was within sight of our new house, father east then the first pile.

Friend is coming up to call coyotes. Will wolves come in to this call too? I think he is going to use a prey call.

Yes I've seen wolves out here before. 2 black ones. Son saw them again last fall. saw one west of us a dark gray. Had a black one come running out of the coulee next to our pick-up, saw 2 black ones taking down a coyote back in 1998.
Have had ,as of now, 5 calves go missing and 2 cows.

If you would rather pm me please do so.

Yes wolves will come into a predator call. The best bait is a dead dog-freeze him and stand it up where thay can see it and set your traps in a circle around it. If you have enough snow you can just set them off the back of a skidoo right in the track. If you can find the trails they use power snares work good on them too.

Does that pesky neighbor near the gravel pit have a dog? I doubt your cows will want to go back to that area for quite some time. Good luck. Interestingly, wolves will stand on their hind legs to get a good look around in tall grass. Makes them look even bigger than they already are.

Don't tempt me per.

We have lost calves to wolves before, but we found them partcially eaten. I have not found this calf yet.

Heard some coyotes this morning. I know they might have found the remains and dragged it off. They are in the same area so I'm heading out there this morning.
