Workin pictures

Been several AZ cowboys end up in this part of NM

Louis and Cindy King (she's Loren Smith's daughter)
Dewey Brown
Ben and Susie Fancher
Zane Mead

I'm sure there is more..that's off the top of my head --

Yeah old Ben fancher was one of a kind he was probly one of the best cowpunchers to ever come out of arizona , he was a cowboys cowboy thats for sure . They dont make them like him anymore and never will again .

Ben was the last of a breed for sure...Susie was a damn fine cowboy herself --raised her daddy's only "son" --she could and would work like a man --
they became really good friends of mine when they were in NM --actually lived on our place for awhile --before they got one of their own.
Ben made my son's first pair of chaps... and filled the pockets full of tootsie roll pops when he gave them to him --Ben was a bigger kid than most kids.
I miss Susie so much yet today -- never thought ole Ben would outlive her.

yeah he was a good ole boy thats for sure . He will be a legend in az for a long time thats for sure , every were i have ever went and worked in any state they always ask me if i know Ben fancher , there is still a bunch of fanchers runnin round over here and they are all good hands too . Margie fancher she was a wagon cook at the diamond a ranch in seligman for a long time she was as tuff as any man i knew ride a bronc catch wild cattle and i seen her clean out the black cat bar one night when she got mad and whne i say clean out i mean there wasnt a man in there that could whip her .

I met Margie a couple times when she came over here...I'm trying to remember the story about when she died... but not sure of it so won't try to recreate it until I ask someone who remembers -- something about waiting a day or two to haul her town after she died or have the funeral or something...something pretty typical for the rugged ruffians they were.

Yeah i am not sure i never heard that one but it wouldnt suprise me , yeah when i was at the diamond a she was the cook and someone had made her mad and diamond a back then was known for pretty bad horses , and it was early and cold and all them horses had humps in their backs and guys were tryin to ease around them and she came runnin out of the cook fly with to cast iron pots about the time the last man was gettin on his horse and she started bangin them pots together and it just echoed up that country it was 12 man crew and probly 8 of the 12 got bucked off right there at camp but everyone was tryin to hold their horses up but we all ended up goin for a bronc ride ha ha , from then on we she said jump we said how high .

Here is an old picture of Ben draggin' for us--well getting ready to :)Most the pictures I have of he and Susie are film, not digital --so not on the computer unless like this one, I dug it out and scanned it. When Ben first got really sick with his heart --I wrote a story about him and ran this pic with it --
Susie sent it to AZ and it ran there somewhere too --
Ben could write some pretty fun cowboy poetry and recite all the old classics --the more beer he drank the better he remember the poems.

wow thats pretty dang cool . You are one of the lucky ones that got to know him so well i didnt know him that well just talked with him every chance i got , i wish i could have worked with him and alot of them other old timers like whistle mills , coley lyons , pat cain and guys like that .

Great pics, cowpuncher!

One of our nephews is working on a ranch around Williams. He should be coming home today or tomorrow, according to his big brother. He's been there since about Easter time. He seems to have really liked it up there.

Monk Maxwell was buying a ranch across the San Francisco River from where I grew up and my dad ranched back a few years ago. Hubby was supposed to go to work for him, but guess something happened, either he lost our phone number, or the deal fell through. I've heard good things about him and his wife, both.

Ohh yeah what ranch ? i might know him . Yeah monk is a hell ove a cowboy so was virgil maxwell , wild cow catchin guys thats for sure , and honest as you can be too . Lots of these wild cow men in az arent that honest about numbers ya know what i mean , there have been many of ranches stocked with cattle that was caught from a wild cow contract .

Sure enjoy your pictures and the conversations...These kind of pictures are stuff I've only seen in magazines or on TV...this sure gives a personal spin on it...Keep em coming.

Great pics and stories guys. Anybody that knows how to contact Monk Maxwell, how about sending me a PM. I lost contact with him as the last time we spoke he was at a remote area on a job cleaning out remnants. Thanks, Paul

If you guys ever want to see Ben he is in the old folks home in Campverde here. He really likes to see some of his old friends. I try and go see him every chance i get. He would sure appreciate the comments that you are making on this site i will let him know next time i go see him what is being said.

Hi folks,
Had some good laughs reading the stories about my Mom! Its true not many wanted to mess with her! LOL But I wanted to let yall know, that no she didnt lay around for a couple of days on a ranch somewhere (thats pretty funny though) she died in the hospital in Abilene Texas and we buried her here in Breckenridge Texas where I live. although I think yalls version would have been more apprpriate and made for a better story, and she would have liked it better!
