WORKING BULLS

Manitoba Rancher I am 59,the ole geezer is 83,another ole coot that I buy fertilizer from is 91 soon to be 92

HAY MAKER - Hey, I am 80! I look 60, act 40 and feel 20! When does the time bracket dictate when a guy goes from "Geezer" to "Coot?" When does he 'blend' from middle-aged to Senior Citizen to Seasoned Citizen to Elder to Old Codger to Gaffer to Old Duffer to - - - Dead?

How does that "OLD" saying go? . . ."You're not old as long as you Feel?" . . .or something like that. I'm getting to where I can't remember those "old" sayings anymore!

My thoughts too, Soapweed.

Haymaker, we went the Limo route in the early 80's.
Know what? I really liked them. After having straightbred
Herefords, (sorry folks) those Limmy calves were so smart.
They never got caught in brush and couldn't figure out
how to get out. They had a lot of vigor. The bulls were easy
to manage and when we gathered the bulls out of the cows
they would stride right out and go. They were good dispositioned.
We didn't have trouble with any of them jumping, except one.

I really did like them. They are handsome cattle.

The problem was the replacement heifers. If you ever got one
to 4 years old, you had them forever. But too many fell out
before then.

I know you don't plan on keeping replacements, but putting
these bulls on mixed breed heifers, you most likely will get
some birthweights you aren't happy with...OR the folks who buy
them will get bweights they aren't happy with. And then your phone
will be ringing. At least that is what would happen in this country.

Are they PB Limousin? Don't find many PB Limousin and that
presents another problem. What is the rest of the genetics?

I remember the lady we bought our Limousin bulls from showing
us some things about Limousin. We went to a sale with her and I
picked out a halfbloold Limousin bull. He was a good son-of-a-gun.
She told me, "No. That's what you want to GET, that's not what you
want to BUY. Buy the PB, cross him with your angus and this is
what you will get from doing that."

Along that line, the sorriest calves I ever saw were Limousin-Chininia
(I'm sure that isn't spelled right, but I'm too tired to care, right now)
cross. I was at the scale when those calves were weighed. I could look
right under their belly and they weighed 450 lbs.

The owner said, "I don't believe I'll try that again."

Our cousins in Wyoming use Limousin bulls, but not on their heifers.
FWIW

A Lim bull will work on heifers if he is built right and if his EPD are right. We raise Lim and we have not pulled a calf in years, Knock On Wood. Putting a Lim on the Angus will keep the good marbling and add more muscle. Good Luck will what ever you do.

I could agree with you r and s, but the heifer actually has more to
do with the bw of the calf than the bull does.

Sure helps if the bull is made right through the shoulders.

And I would be the first to admit, (sorry I forgot it in my other post)
that the Limousin breed now has way for tools for selection than they
did in the early 80's.

I have related this story before, but I will attempt it again.
Some elderly friends of ours who raised horned Hereford cattle for
years retired and kept 50 head of hereford cows. For what ever
reason, they decided to breed them to Limousin. They bought 2
Limousin bulls for these cows. The first year they calved the cows,
all calved without assistance, but 2. The next year the very same
thing. All calves alone except the same two cows. Having raised
the cows themselves, they went back and looked at these 2
particular cows. They had BW of over 100 lbs. as calves themselves.

That was a good lesson for me.
It's not just up to the bull.

Good point. When I keep heifers, I think about that but just didn't say it. When I was young and dumb, now I am old and hope that I have some sence, I heat sycn the cows and bred them to the new Denver champion. We had angus at that time. What a wreck. They all calved within a couple of days when it was cold and wet. Had calves in the house in the pickups. Lost half the calves and several cows. I had also fed the cows to good during the winter. clover hay. Calves were to big and the bull was unproven. His bw epd's went way up. Hard leason, but I sure learned alot.

Haymaker, she says she has some awesome bulls left, I am waiting on her to tell me which number to give you. I will pm it when she does.
