What type dewormers do ya'll use?

I used safeguard drench for years then the last couple of years went to generic Ivomec. Seemed to work ok but always have 2 to 3 % that don't seem to respond.

Using Cydectin this spring to change things up but hate the cost. 3 times cost of generic Ivomec.

I use Virbamec pour on. I have been told once a year is enough but if I see any sign of lice I will use twice a year. It is easy to use as you don't have to put them in a chute unless you are going to do something else to them. Just treat them in the alley as you move them thru.

I've drenched with valbazen or safe guard and poured with warbex. I've used Cydectin for two or three years in a row. This year I went back to Ivermectin (generic) and am money ahead and well pleased. I got better lice control than I had with cydectin and the cows look good. I didn't have any that I thought still had worm troubles. It's hard to beat the one dollar per cow that ivermectin costs IMO.

Cylence is another good one for lice control. It is fairly cheap and has a real good applicator.

For worms, injectible Ivomec is best. The generic form only had to be 80% as good as the original, so in my estimation, that isn't good enough.

Safeguard darn sure kills more worms. If you use it in a feed-through you get a kill over a longer period of time and that is the best. That way there isn't a peak kill and then nothing. Safeguard works on the metalobism of the worm so if they get a bite of say, mineral with Safeguard on Monday and don't get another bite until later in the week, the worms are still being killed all that time. The Avermectin products don't get nearly as many worms and there is starting to be an immunity build up to avermectin pour-on products. Read the April 2005 BEEF magazine. Dr. Don Bliss really blows the lid off de-worming products in an article there.
