China's New Meat Labeling Regulations Could be Costly for U.S. Pork Exporters
China's new meat labeling requirements will become effective June 1 and are expected to be problematic for U.S. pork exporters, according to an article in the Appleton Post Crescent. The new requirements may decrease pork trade with China because the cost of compliance may deter U.S. processors. China's requirement that exporters weigh and label individual packages of pork is expected to add the most cost for U.S. exporters. Even though China imports high volumes of U.S. pork, most products are lower in value with low profit margins. The U.S. Meat Export Federation has been working to help reach a compromise between U.S. and Chinese trade officials, but have not met with much success.
