We've had problems with fences and keepin cows in goin on a month or so now. Since all the big rains. Not only do you have lots of water washin down thru the creek bottoms....but lots of other stuff...trees....lots of sticks, leaves etc...that all get hung up on the fences. We've got 12 or so cows and calves that have just decided it's better to go thru or over a fence than it is to stay put. They are just askin for a ride to town. Yesterday I had riden the pasture while Mr Lilly was messin with a horse up at the corrals....and I noticed that I hadn't seen the "Travelers" so I went back and told him they were gone. He left in the Jeep and I in my Toyota...both of us seein if we could find where they were or where they got out at. I ended up findin them......wayyyyy in the back...across the fence in a thickly wooded pasture that's not ours.

The day started out so peacefull like.......LOL

A real mess.

Some of the escapee's......."You lookin for us?"

Along about this time Mr Lilly cut the fence......and then he left me sittin there to try and coax them back in.....all but 2 came back real quick...the other two were harder headed and wanted to do laps around thru the trees on the place, beller, and act like they'd been abandoned.....finally they both came back across.
He left in "Radar" to go get the dozer, to clear off the fence to build new.

While he was gone I cut wire, and pulled T posts up. Then he shows up with the Dozer.....this thing sure comes in handy for fence jobs.

My fencin help....she was worn out.

As we got the fence in the back strung with wire.....discovered that we didnt have the Tpost driver with us....it was at the house in another truck. So off I go to get it......as I pulled out the gate onto the highway.....looked out across the hayfield.....there the daggum cows were that we'd just got in on the backside. So I ran them back in....they'd tore the electric fence all to smitherines. We rewired that with 3 new wires....made sure it was goodn' electified....blue sparks offa screw driver on the wire. This was all done by headlights on the Jeep...and my truck. Then back to the first fence to finish puttin posts and tyin the wires. Uhggggg......what a day.
No cows out today......thank goodness.

Nifty pictures, Jersey Lilly. Glad you took the time to document your day, even though it didn't go as planned. In your picture of the "escapees," is the one on the left by any chance the ringleader? Somehow, she just has the look of a rebel. :-)

Hope the new week goes better for you. Take care and take pictures.

Good eye Soapweed...I've always said when it comes to cows that get out......"The first one out is the last one back in" and she was one of the two that remained on the other side of the fence after the others had all come back in. I don't know if she's the leader...or if the other one is the leader....or maybe it's a joint effort on leadership.....

Ever since we got this cow....I've said that I sure would like to have a hide rug made outta her.....She just don't know how close she came to that yesterday. LOL

You'd better dehorn her before you make that rug out of her hide. Otherwise, sure as shootin', you'll stub your tootsies on those horn stubs, and it will make you go bump in the night. Leave those luxurious ears, though. You could warm a foot in each one as you sit on the couch watching TV. :-)

Lilly ,
Your helper is in a very familiar pose. These weiners seem to be rather lax when it comes to handing you tools and stuff. No wonder other ranchers have border collies... O well they do keep our gloves warm. its amazing how much that Braunveih/Brangus looks like a jersey calf! I'm sure in a day or two the resemblence will fade, tooo cute :)

Canadian Cowgirl.....for a dime yesterday...or any other given day this last few weeks you prolly coulda had them cows...for loadin em up and haulin em off. LOL Nothin worse than cows that won't stay put.

LOL Soapweed......gave me an idea ......I could just make a pair of houseshoes outta her ears....then my feets would stay warm no matter where I was in the house. Thanks for the tip about the horns LOL I'll hafta remember that when the day comes that she no longer is usefull.....I just really like her hide.....could make hamburger out of her...and get my rug to boot. OH.......dunno if ya'll remember or not...but her name is "Ugly"

Judith....we've had a handful of Braunvieh's for about 4 years now...and the calves that are born lookin like that'n, stay lookin that way. But most are born black. Even tho black is the color of choice around here, I sure do like the calves that come out braunvieh colored...they seem to do better than the ones outta the braunviehs that are black.....Dunno why.

Nice pictures Lily. Those blossoms sure look a lot like our wild plum along the creek. I can almost smell them by looking at the picture. Those dozers are a handy machine. We have one we use for putting in creek crossing, dam repair and other things. Sure got a nice spring look down there. We don't get much for leaves on our trees here till nearly June. Meanwhile we'll just watch your spring pictures and wait.

I think Soapweed nailed it on the "ear foot slippers"..lol With your talent, you could whip up a nice cozy pair in no time..lol One thing about it when you have a fencing mess...you really have a fencing mess...and we complain about tumbleweeds getting caught...glad we don't have that problem. I agree with EmptyPockets...those pictures really are giving me spring fever...thanks alot! It was pretty nice here today though. Well good luck at keeping the escapees in...great pictures as usual...

Thanks for the picture story Lilly, looks like spring has sprung over there, not much green around here yet been too dry,but finally some rain, been out on the front porch watchin it all nite.
I agree there aint nothing like a dozer to move stuff around,is that the same one yall hauled home not long ago ?................good luck

Im thinking I need to get me a dozer, this skidsteer is OK for some brush clearing, but not good for big stuff, lots of oak wilt up here that sure needs pushed.................good luck
PS wound up with 3 1/4 inch rain so far, havent seen that in a long time.

I dunno how much we got last night. I got woke up to thunder boomers durin the night along about 3am. Smiled and rolled over n went back to sleep. LOL
It's still drizzly rain out now. But from the radar it looks like the strongest of it has passed.

Glad that you got a good soaker out of it...ya sure needed it.
