Yesterday about mid day I got a call from Pedro Briceno, a regular client of mine for "pacas" who needed bales for his horses. We were just finishing loading an 18 wheeler with 400 and I had about 20 nice green bales of bermuda left over and told him if he wanted them, I'd hold them till the end of the day. He said he'd drive over and pick them up but never showed.
This morning I gave him and call and told him that my driver was headed into the nearest city to buy diesel and other stuff and since he'd be passing alongside the Pedro's ranch, we'd drop the bales off. I didn't even mention that he'd not showed up yesterday.
He thanked me and then said, "I guess you didn't hear what happened here at the ranch yesterday afternoon?" I hadn't.
He went on to tell me that his 1 1/2 year old daughter had drowned in the kid's swimming pool. I was speechless. What can one say when hit with something like that?
When my driver returned later in the day he told me that the guys there told him that Pedro and his wife had recently hired a young girl/woman to care for the infant. Apparently she got busy with something, the child wandered out an open door, and when they found her, she was dead in the pool.
Pedro is the guy who got me interested in chickens. He's got two structures with a capacity of about 45,000 birds and is building a third. I'd visited with him in January, met his wife for the first time, and also saw the child who died yesterday.
Such tragedies sure put things in perspective. Life is so precious and so fleeting and we're lucky for every minute the good Lord gives us.
