I had a flat tire on my SP swather. Front drive tire. This is a '78 or '79 5000 IHC. As far as I know it is still the original tires on it. My Dad bought it in the early '80s, never changed the tires, I bought it from him in 2000, never touched them.
Anyway, I took the tire off, no small job as it is dualled up for the swamp, and you won't believe what flattened the tire......
A friggin' sticker(as in decal)!!!! It measures about 1/4 by 1/2 inch, and was stuck inside the tire about on the centerline. Probably a stock number or something. It wore a hole through the tube where it was sort of folded up in one corner. Believe it or not!!! It had a perfect rectangular impression worn in the tube, and finally put a hole in it.
So I got my calculator out........
This tire is about 8 feet in circumference.That would be 660 revolutions in a mile(5280' divided by 8 feet). Average field speed of 4 mph = 2640 revolutions per hour. Assuming this machine works 200 hours per year..... thats 528,000 revoultions per year. Multiply that by 27 years = 14.256 million revolutions. Thats how many revs it took for a ^%$&^% sticker to wear a hole in my tube.
I know a pebble or metal filing or whatever,left between tire and tube, will put a hole in it pretty quick. But I would have never believed a sticker.
Go ahead and call me full of $hit, because I don't friggin' believe it either!!! :D :D :wink:
 
I believe it Tim!! Good thing it wasnt one of these new tubes becase the sticker would have went through in a few days. Damn cheap chinese rubber :x

only took 25 revolutions for a rake tooth to drain the tire on the 8640 last week. I watched it roll past about 4 times before I realized what the hell it was, it kind of hypnotized me !
 
Several years ago, gravel from the old railroad bed was hauled onto our road. Since then we have picked up several big tubs (the kind that 250 pounds of molasses-type feed comes in) full of railroad spikes. We have ruined quite a few tires, and we always make sure to pay extra for "road hazard" insurance when buying new tires.

The Kosmo Kid was on his way to town the other night, and called on his cell phone that he had a flat tire. Peach Blossom picked him up and he decided to stay home that night. When we took off the tire the next day, the same railroad spike that wrecked his tire was found imbedded up underneath the fender wall of his car. I probably wouldn't have believed that, had I not seen it. If it had been a motorcycle, the flying spike could have hurt a feller. :?
 
Speakin of rail road spikes......with our place havin a rail road runnin all along the length of it, and having to check flood gates that go under the tracks. We find spikes all the time. I mean gobs of them. And you can't pick them up and sell for scrap iron because they "belong to the rail road" what we have found a real good use for, is......these longgggggggg bolts that they use to tie the trussel supports together with. (no we don't take em out LOL) they are layin all under the bridges in the rocks along the tracks. They make excellant twist bars when puttin the wire on an H brace. 2 1/2 to 3 ft long works great.
 
I saw the exact same thing flatten a tire on 70's model chisel last summer. This wasn't the origional tire, however.

You're right, Mike. I made the whole thing up. :roll:
Next time you put a new tire on something, don't worry about checking inside it for any stickers. Go right ahead and install it. A sticker will never,ever wear a hole through the tube. :roll: :roll: :wink:
 
probably running around nude some place so he isnt here to defend himself :). I hear it is hot enough in your neck o the woods!
