All the water around our country now has been a bit of an adjustment for our cows. Two so far have calved in or close enough to the water to drown their calves. One was a 10 year old purebred EXT daughter, I know NR it may be a blessing in disguise, and the other was just yesterday with a three year old who calved in about 4 inches of water by a slough. As luck would have it a cow had twins yesterday so we had an extra for the three year old.
NR will be glad to know that no extra calves showed up in time for the old EXT cow.

Oh well if that is the cost of rain it's well worth the cost of admission.

Water is a real blessing for us, but that really sucks to lose a couple of calves to it.

I had a commercial cow calve right in a water hole a few years ago, l just happened to be on my way down the road to get the mail when I saw her. I managed to get the calf out and them both moved to higher ground. Maybe should have let him die as I ended up bottle feeding him for a few months because his herf mom went dry about after a couple of weeks fresh. She grew wheels really quick.

Looks like more rain is in the forecast all this week, good luck with the rest of your calving and may your babies all be born in a dry area.

Water for sure is a huge blessing. Understatement of the year!

Glad to hear there is more rain in your forecast. Did the recent moisture fill any of your sloughs and or pot holes?

We had an old cow cross the fence into the creek when a tree fell on it, so she could have her calf in privacy. When I found her she was walking the fence trying to get back out, and the calf was following right behind. Not three feet behind them was our raging torrent of a creek. The banks were straight up and down, and the water was so fast that if the calf fell in, we'd never even catch up to it, let alone pull it out. Had some tense moments there, but the old girl managed to lead him to the gate without anyone washing away in the flood.

They got hauled to summer pasture today, so everyone's happy now. And dry.

The water holes are filling up nicely Dylan, now for some heat to get things growing.

The Purple Martins have not come back, I hope they have moved on and not starved because of the cold weather..

Yeah I know, it was blowing and raining and snowing off and on all that day, we were moving pairs in the morning and squalls kept coming through and everyone would turn tail and wait it out.

Pictures from 2 different days? That would explain it. I was wondering why you had to switch horses part way through trailing her in to the yard.

I thought it was the green that was out of place, not the ear flaps...
We just finished up snow storm #4 of our late calving season here. Our short gestations started April 20th.
Not even a seed in the ground yet, although we were nearly dry enough to seed our corn before the last snow. That is a great problem to have...
Also, I noticed your working chute looks close to home...LOL.

What I noticed is, that sure seems like a small horse or else you are a larger than average fellow. Or it could just be the way the photo turned out.

I wish it was the photo or my abnormal height, but my little pony has done about all the growing up she is going to do.

Bought her as when she was about 10 months and was expecting her to grow a bit more than she did.

My girls get lots of laughs seeing me on her. :shock:

The good thing is she turning into a real handy cow pony. She can turn on a dime and she wants to control them.
