Disposition, is it Heritable or Learned

Having calved out a few hundred clones, I can tell you that there is absolutely a BIG genetic factor associated with disposition. But there can also be a pretty big environmental influence. A crazy recip or severe mishandling can mess up a perfectly calm animal.

    Multimin question

We have been using Multimin90 for a few years. Not as a substitute for minerals but as a supplement to loose minerals. We give it to donors and recips before flushing/transfers, to calfs at weaning and to feeder steers about every 90 days. Our embryo production and conception rates have...

    Texas Rain

We got 2.2" just south of Fort Worth. There are puddles in the ponds but that's better than completely dry like they were. We planted about 150 of wheat and oat pastures about 2 weeks ago. This rain should get that going.

    trailer floor

The Wilson aluminum trailer is AWESOME! We've been pulling steel bar tops for 40 years. This trailer pulls like a dream and we averaged almost 2 mpg better pulling this than a smaller steel trailer. It cost as much as 2 steel trailers the same size but I'm convinced it will prove to be well...

    trailer floor

Quick Update: First of all, thanks for all of the advice and suggestions. We made the trip last weekend. Drove 25 hrs from TX to PA straight through. Recovered in the hotel for 10 hrs then loaded up the calves Saturday morning. There were 18 calves that averaged 603 lbs. They fit...

    trailer floor

I'm not an inexperienced hauler. We've been doing this for 40+ years. Just never used an aluminum trailer before. They are so not common in TX. Typically only show calves or horses get dragged around in them around here.

    trailer floor

From Pennsylvania to TX. We plan to go half way (~12 hrs) stop/unload for the night and drive another 12 hrs the next day.

    trailer floor

I am about to buy my first aluminum trailer (Wilson) that will have a diamond plate patterned aluminum floor. One of the first uses of the trailer will be to haul a load of calves for 1500 miles. Should I put rubber mats or something else on the floor?

    Calving Tip

Passive absorption of IgG slows down greatly after about 6 hrs. Of course, nursing the cow is the best option for everyone involved. But if the calf hasn't nursed in the first few hours, it needs some form of cholostrum fast. After 24 hrs, very little absorption of anitbodies occurs.

Weigh bars for a squeeze chute

I have Tru-Test load bars under my Stampede Steel squeeze chute. Been using them for about 5 years. Works great. Never had a problem.

    Let's talk about Mycoplasma

We've had good luck with Draxxin followed by Mycotil (if needed). For joint ill, we first treat with Draxxin. If it continues to be a problem, we then flush the joint and inject Mycotil directly into the joint.
