    Bull fertility testing

I was just curious how people felt about fertility testing their bulls every year. In the past 16 years, we have had one older bull fail. I'm questioning if testing them is worth the effort each year. Any thoughts?

Does anybody know of a good vet around Beulah, ND? My friend sent cows there due to the drought, and now is selling them. He needs to get them preg checked, and needs to find somebody good. Thanks in advance for any help :D .

...proof once again that there is no perfect calving season

I especially liked the comment where the rancher had to calve through barns so that the cattle could be under fans and misters :? . Heat stress may cause premature calving in fall-calving herds University of Missouri Extension | Updated: August 6, 2012 COLUMBIA, Mo – Some heat-stressed...

    Young Open Cows

I've had a conversation with a couple of different people regarding keeping two and threes in the herd. I realize people sort them off to feed differently since they're young and growing, but it's not possible here since I need to keep them out of the trees during the last part of pregnancy...

    Calving 2012...a year to forget

This first pic pretty well sums up my luck this calving season :?. When I went to feed this morning, this poor girl followed me around, bawling and bawling. Her tight bag was a bad sign, but I certainly wasn't expecting to find this. Here was a special project early in the season...

    Strange Weather

It's just not right feeding hay in weather hotter than day you baled it :? . If this keeps up, I'll be making a plan to wean calves. Hopefully things improve in the next 50 days. Crazy!

    Cow that can't get up

How many days would you give a cow who can't get up, time to get up, before shooting her? My interest level is right at 0 on having a daily "project", but might give her a few more days if there's a chance. She does have strength to prop herself up on her front end, and can stand for a bit if...

    Wasted Donation

This must be a joke... two universities are gifted a 50,000 acre ranch to run and teach future ag students with, AND they both want to sell it?! I don't believe I'll be sending in my meager annual donation to UW after reading this, what a waste of a great teaching resource . HORSE CREEK...

    Winter Update 2012

So far it has been a decent winter... not the best, not the worst. We've had around 4 feet of snow this season, but luckily have had nice breaks in between storms :D . Scenic meadow a few weeks ago. My feeding buddy. Part of the heifer calves are in their own pasture, and some are in...

    Fall 2011!

    Sale Barn Commission Rates

I've been trying to evaluate options for selling a part-load of heifer calves. I called Centennial Livestock, Fort Collins, CO to ask about commission, and they charge 2.5% for the first $10,000, then 2% thereafter, not including yard, feed, and brand inspection charges. Throw trucking on top...

    Summer 2011

Just a little update as to what's been going on up on the rockpile :D . Unlike most people, we've dodged the severe weather, and have had just the right amount of rain to keep it green and growing  . It really doesn't get much better than this. My cattle and yearling heifers stayed...

    Later Spring 2011

This spring has been going well, and I plan on turning bulls out soon, then head to the forest the first part of June :D . Here are some recent pics of what's been going on! We branded over a month ago. I put them in the chute and feed them into the calf table. Yearling heifers last...

    April 2011

I would gladly trade some of this bare ground for a foot or two of snow. The dry weather has made for great calving though :D . Newborns trailing out to the big group. The heifers are producing nice calves out of some Mytty in Focus sired bulls. Last year I never could get caught...

    Cows not cleaning?!

I'm down to calving the last little bunch out, and these cows all of a sudden aren't cleaning :? . Management is the same as the first 85%+ which calved, so any ideas as to why I'm seeing this now??? Also, any ideas on how to treat them? Usually I only get one or two a year. One idea I've...

    Calving Report

Calving has gone well, and I'm almost 3/4 done :D . Here's one of my favorite cows, due to her spotted feet. Randi's pic reminded me of her. It's never a good sign to see the placenta before the calf  The ending wasn't too good, but this twin lucked out and got her own mom...
