    Bale grazing

We had at least 30 bushels on the ground on a pivot several years ago after a bad October wind storm. I fenced it into fourths with a hot wire and gave 400 head no more than 2 hours access to the corn. We gave them about a half feed of hay each morning before they went to the corn. Each...

    Land Sale of the Week:

How many pieces have you bought that seemed too high at the time George, but after a few years you're glad you bought it. I'll bet this piece will be the same. :) Are you planting corn yet?

Direct payments are a thing of the past with the latest farm bill I believe. You can raise whatever you want these days.

Oat hay and other spring cash crop thoughts. Do U feed oats

About five years ago when corn was cheap I considered planting some of my pivots to grass. After doing some research I found out that it would take about as much fertilizer as a corn crop so decided just to plant corn again which turned out to be a really good decision the way the price of corn...

Oat hay and other spring cash crop thoughts. Do U feed oats

I love putting oat hay in my feeder calf ration. We used to grind alfalfa to put in their ration but used to have problems with bloat so the switch to oat hay helped with that. I've never sold oat hay but it should be worth about the same as first cutting alfalfa/grass hay I would guess. Peas...

    High moisture corn or Earlage?

For his sake I hope so. He got them bought at a decent price, about $975 a head. His order buyer did a good job for him, very few poor cows. He doesn't do anything half way.Always bigger better and faster.

    High moisture corn or Earlage?

My neighbor bought 1,000 open cows the end of November to feed. They are up to about 30 pounds of corn now. He hopes to have them fat in 100 days. Last week when it was warm we branded, wormed and implanted them. It was a lot of work but we got it done. The thing I couldn't believe is how...

Changing fencing from expense to depreciation

What I heard is that every repair or supplies bought over $500 is now going to have to be depreciated. What a book keeping nightmare that will be. The downward spiral continues.

For a neighbor, question on harvesting corn

I would definately have someone combine it. Grazing straight corn is a risky proposition at best. Then graze the stalks like 3 L M & C said. If many ears fall off before it gets combined you need to be real careful. Lots of cows died last fall from too much corn on the ground.

    Hay Auction

You get that hay sold you'll have to give your cowherd to RA to avoid taxes.[/quote) I guess I could go back to winter calving if I wanted to solve my tax ptoblem. I couldn't help myself, looked like the pot needed one more stirring.

    Hay Auction

Are you getting this storm jigs? Happy for your hay sale. I just talked to my sister in Rapid City. They just had 10 inches of snow today and a lot of wind.

    Hay Auction

If anyone is interested in some good alfalfa hay the auction will be Friday April 5th at 7:00 MDT in Vetal SD at the R Bar. The hay will be sold in semiload lots of either 32 or 34 bales. Hope to see some of you there even if you don't need any hay. 8)

    Hay Auction

I am going to sell some alfalfa/orchard grass at auction soon. Time and date are yet to be determined but I'm thinking about March 30th. That will give me a couple weeks to get some advertising done. The majority of the hay will be 3rd cutting with a RFV of 150 and 19.8% protein. There will...

    Alfalfla with grass....

You guys are probably right, I knew I shouldn't have trusted my memory.

    Alfalfla with grass....

I agree with Clarencen also. The newer variety of crested he talked about is called Fairway. Doesn't grow in bunches like the old stuff. If you're Irrigated go with about 12-15 pounds of alfalfa and no more than 2 pounds of orchard grass.

    Hay swap

I have a unique problem. I have too much good hay. I got four cuttings of alfalfa/orchard grass from my pivot this year. We usually get three cuttings but with the early spring we started in May instead of June. My problem is that I don't have enough average quality grass type or millet...

    grass tetany

The article in Beef was very interesting. I had never heard loose salt could prevent grass tetany. I usually start putting mag ox in the salt and mineral about this time of year. Maybe salt is all I ever really needed.

    Fence Brace

When I saw this old thread show up I remembered immediately my response to the naysayers who said this kind of brace would never work in their area. That's why I loved Northern Rancher so much, he was always looking for new and improved ways to do things. Every electric cross fence brace I...

    Hay..Asset orExpense

I have seen cases where hay that started out as money in the bank turned into little piles of rotted away mouse nest. In these situations it becomes a huge waste of money, time and fuel. If I can't feed up hay in two years or less it's time to sell hay, which I have done in the past. By the...

Chopping day - corn silage photos

I beg to differ with you eatbeef. If you can sell hay for $150-$175 and it cost you $50 to put it up that is called profit. Supply and demand works everytime it's tried. On that note I'm not sure how anyone can afford to pay what hay is going for once it gets down south. If they can afford...
