    Fences

We do the vast majority of any fencing. It is simply easier than fighting with neighbours, and it is as much to keep their cattle out than ours in. Some neighbours will help out, buy fencing supplies and some don't.

    roadside grass

'Round here, you own the rights to any ditches that are along your own land. Rules are though, that if it hasn't been cut/baled by July 15 then it is up for grabs by whomever wants it. And if the bales haven't been picked by Aug 15 they are up for grabs (not that anyone ever really would do...

    roadside grass

Most gets cut for hay in this part of the world. As long as the ditches aren't too steep or small for the cutting machine and baler, anyways.

    Round Bale feeding...need experience

We roll out bales for the main herd, most of the winter. We have a truck with a deck on it, and we also use the bucket on the tractor. You can also use a bale shredder. We also tubgrind the bales for calves and for our cows at calving time, and when we want to mix poorer quality feed off with...

    Grass Pictures

With cows added in of course. This is the best our grass has looked in a long time. These pics are near Mortlach, Sk (close to Moose Jaw) but our grass here at home looks pretty similar. We are, from what I understand, one of the wettest areas in the province. That is pretty unusual for us, we...

    Fencing Pictures (lots and lots)

Thanks for the comments everyone. Soap we do have some awesome ranching country up here. I love that wide open prairie. Silver, somedays I feel the same way. It has a way of making you realize just how small you are. The native pasture only runs a lot of cattle because there is a lot of land...

Thank you. He got kicked or stepped on in late March. Broke his left front leg just above the knee. It has been a long time, but he is almost back to normal now.

    Fencing Pictures (lots and lots)

Or, should I say, pictures I took while we were out fencing. Honest, we did fix fence  , I didn't spend ALL my time taking photos  Some of the wildlife in the area These boys were pretty quiet This one just hung tight And these guys didn't really want their picture taken...

    What a waste!

We literally just got started today. Looks like we will get enough hay for the cows. Don't think there will be any extra feed around this place this winter. I know a lot of people in the area are going to be hard pressed to make enough to get them through the winter. We got the rain, but it was...

    Pasture Costs

Around here it is pasture is almost always rented in $/cow(pair)/day. We pay $0.80/ day for pairs. The local community pasture is $0.86/day for pairs. I know a lot of people who pay over $1.00/pair, and we have charged over that when we rented pasture out.

    pasture grass for sandy soil?

All we have is sand. Most of our pastures are Crested Wheat or mixes. Crested wheat is a good grass for early season, and late if you get rain. But if you don't have much rain the feed value of it decreases rapidly once it matures. On the other hand, once established I don't think you can kill...

    fencing

Our permanant fence is all barbed wire. Mostly 3 wire, usually wooden posts 18-20 feet apart. The only place we have 4 wire is on the exterior of our pasture that is on the #1 highway. Interior is 3 wire. Some places are only 2 wires. And we use single strand electric with rebar when we fence...

A few pics while makin rounds, added more pics

Mmmmmmmm, Nice pictures!! How old is the calf on the cow? That is a good looking pair!! As for the guy with the chewed off ear (nice looking calf), we get shorter ears up here when it gets just a little too cold in calving season. We wouldn't get docked too bad for ears trimmed just that little...
