    How'd calving go?

I'll let you know in a month. Cows started a week ago.

Do most ranchers still brand their cattle or only use ear tags?

I'm wondering how you could get Longhorns in a chute in the first place. Like the other guys said, sell those and get some good cattle, ones that will fit in a chute so you can brand them.

    Spring branding

I help at least 15 friends and neighbors brand every spring. I love the chance to visit, work, joke around and enjoy a beverage or two with all the guys. The only branding I don't enjoy so much is my own, too much to worry about, but somehow we always manage to get it done.

    May/June Calving Update

Maybe you all are right, it was a good grass year here, my Dad is 89 and he said he had never seen the grass so tall. We had over 30 inches of rain this past growing season. But, 7% was the number for years no matter when the cows calved, and then that big of an improvement? I guess in a true...

    May/June Calving Update

After preg checking cows this week I was reminded of this thread from a few years ago. I'm not sure there is any correlation to the change I made in my mineral program but it is the only thing I can think of that may have improved my pregnancy rate this year. I started feeding a chelated...

    Cull cows

The bull market was even higher, saw 2300 pound bulls bringing $1.50!

    Cull cows

I sold 20 dry cows yesterday in Philip. They weighed 1521 pounds and brought $119.25/lb. I was filing some papers from last year and I sold some on the same day that weighed 1494 pounds at $80.20. Is hamburger a third higher in price as it was last year? If not it probably should be.

    Branding Etiquette

I went to help my neighbor brand his newly purchased pairs calves last week. Part of them came from WY and part from NE. Someone had attempted to band the bull calves at birth. There were probably 40 calves that some idiot missed one or both nuts. It kept 3 guys busy performing major...

Customers calves sold on Superiors Country Page

How did your heifers sell? I heard those steers were NHTC, it would be interesting to compare them to implanted calves to see what the premium was.

    Branding Etiquette

Your area of the country sounds a lot like ours. Branding here is a tradition that I hope never goes away. Neighbors and friends helping each other and having a great time while doing it. You don't have to go very far to the east of here and they have lost that tradition of neighbor helping...

    Branding Etiquette

I know a guy who sits on his horse until he is asked to rope and if he gets replaced he might lower himself to run an iron. I don't trade help with him, not my kind of neighbor.

    Branding Etiquette

I do everything but rope. Never had the opportunity to learn when I was younger and since most of my relatives and friends rope I never felt the need to. I go to enough brandings that I usually have at least 50 people at mine and everyone that wants to rope gets the opportunity to. However no...

Call Cody and tell him a couple of Martin boys sent you, he's as honest as the day is long.

    bulls

I was in the same boat as you were 20 years ago bgc, 6 frame cows, pencil guts, frail, rafter backed, you name it I had it. It was my own fault because I was the one buying the Angus bulls. In 1997 we started infusing Jorgensen genetics from river rat's herd since they are a cooperator herd...

    Triplets

Yesterday was my due date, and since I no longer tag I have no idea what percent I'm at. There sure is a slug of calves out there though. I sold my June calvers though so it's going to be fast and furious.

    Triplets

Have you gotten moisture out of these last two systems? We got over 4 inches of rain/snow in the last 10 days. Hope calving is going smooth for you.

    Calf prices

Don't mean to brag but that was actually a damn good prediction. I sold corn for $7.66 / bushel six months after that post due to the drought of 2012 and the price of feeders kept climbing all through that time. I expect corn to be in that $4 to $5 range this fall which can only help the...

    May calving

Got my first calf out of the cows yesterday in a blizzard, right on schedule about 2 weeks before their due date. I can't wait till May! My heifers are on a break between the AI calves and the bull bred calves. Great moisture here, probably at least 2 1/2 inches. :P

    Red Angus bull question

BRG could help you, or maybe recommend one of his.

    Who?

Our program is very similar to yours. I give pasturella at branding too. Not sure if it's effective or not but money is no object if it helps keep the calves healthy.
