    92% Americans Support COOL

Thats all it will cost porker?? No additional costs associated with logistics? Tracking the tested meat, the effects on the production line or the coordination of production lines for tested and non-tested? You are in a dream world porker. Can the tested plants slaughter non-tested beef...

    92% Americans Support COOL

I think these questions are pretty rediculous, if there are two steaks side by side, and one was tested for BSE and one wasn't....I would probably buy.....the cheaper one!!! Sure I want all those things too, but when it comes down to it, I am not going to pay for it. Lets just increase our...

What criteria do y'all use for buying heifers?

Greybeard, not sure if I quite follow your well culled herd analogy??? The human race has pretty much eliminated natural selection....the culls have no where to go, and with all of the slim pickings, the culls are the only ones left. Although recycling has really been catching on the last...

about two more years of good calf prices.

I was thinking the same thing Bill. About your price of barley comparison, that is exactly my point. If barley stays at $2.25 and Wheat is over $5. Who the heck is going to grow barley? And if wheat is harvested in good conditions? Are we going to import corn? Then with the ethanol, corn...

about two more years of good calf prices.

Jason, that makes some sense, but what about the price of feed, higher grain prices all hit the cow-calf guys in the pocket book. Won't take much of a disaster to see rallys in grain prices. Also in Canada, lets hope the Canadian dollar doesn't go much or any higher.

Canada Quarantines Possible BSE Farm; Industry Worried

Just a thought Tam, but it could be just bulls or bucks, whatever, are just carriers to other animals. (not that I believe much about these other theories) but this would mean though, once one cow has it it should spread around teh entire herd.

    "CyLence" pour-on insecticide.

hi Tim, we have used in the winter to for lice, (when we are feeling cheap) done it a few times and had mediocre results, but this year we are having bad flies, and we put it on our bulls, and like Lilly says it helps for about a month.

    Nuts, Whackos, etc.

I agree Tommy, unless they are being offensive in their posts with their language, then it is very easy for us to ignore and scroll over someones post if we don't want to read it. The only problem is when there is too much reaction, and you begin to scroll over pretty well everything, then you...

    what a load of crap!!!

Well we raise some purebred Limo bulls, and we too have a problem of them lasting too long, but we have also used some for over 10 years too!! On our place, the only grain breeding animals will ever get is a bit of oats.

All Ag subsidies to end in 2013

Whooopdy doooo, so what....got rid of a few export subsidies..... how many programs being used even fit under the "export subsidy" title?? What about all the other income and price support programs, and all the other government programs to help agriculture.......those are the ones that will...

    Atkins?

I don't really agree with RobertMac's post/example of "change in demand"...he is simply showing movements along the demand curve, the price quantity relationship of demand, this all relates to elasticity of demand and whether or not the industry is better off depends on the cost of production...

Are Cattle Prices High Because of "Tight Supply"?

Randy Wrote I couldn't agree more Randy!! Not worth reading anything on here any more because as you say something you just get slammed and critiqued in such a demeaning way.....and without ever receiving any worthwhile input to assist the person/group/idea. Sure people have opinions that we...

    are cattle a capital investment?

Sandhusker, don't talk of such frightening ideas!! But I am more talking about depreciation in a budget in terms of economic analysis versus tax reasons. When figuring out COP for a cow-calf enterprise, should we include depreciation?

Japanese panel gives greenlight to U.S. beef

So is an "extremely low" risk a lot better than "very low" risk  Shouldn't there be a Quantitative answer before exporting US beef!

    are cattle a capital investment?

Very interesting, looks to be quite a difference between Canada and the US. That is a question that comes up at times regarding cow-calf budgets, is should we also include cow depreciation, as a cost to the enterprise. What does everyone think? Becomes more of a factor in Canada since BSE.

Where do you draw the line?

But in your question to BB, did you consider that the losses in the US is more than just due to the border being closed!!
