    Heritability of phenotype.

Highly respected, and yet very few practice what he spoke of. In fact, it seems most do the opposite - propagate the outliers, outcross continually, breed for change rather than consistency.

    Heritability of phenotype.

FH, are you still sourcing bulls from his herd? What's the status of his operation since his passing? I've been curious. I ran across his writings a few years back and it changed my perspective completely on sire selection. He made so much more sense than 95% of what I read about genetics...

    Beginner Interested In cattle

:agree: I'd also look into Akaushi cattle. Quite a few breeders in Texas. It might be a way to add value. I bought some bulls last spring to use as a terminal cross on Angus cows. We'll see next fall how I get along.

    Delivering DDGS to the herd?

I spent most of the day wrenching on the old forage wagon. Ugh. I'm thinking the further I can stay away from bearings, grease zerks, chains, and shear bolts the better off I am. A few extra trips with the home made nifty feeder is sounding better all the time.

    Delivering DDGS to the herd?

I made one as well, out of a floater tire, but it only holds about 700 lb of DDGS. If my math is right, I don't think I could get 3500 lb of DDGS in two tires and still be able to lift them with my bale bed. 1750 lb of DDGS plus the tire is more than I could handle. 1750 lb ddgs / 15 lb/cu...

    Delivering DDGS to the herd?

This thing is coming up on a retirement auction next week. I wonder if I could make it into sort of a "dump box" for my bale bed, have a small hole in the end and let it flow out as I drive along? Then I could set it off when I'm not using it. Might be worth a try?

    Delivering DDGS to the herd?

I saw those when I was researching, but they are on the small side. Has anyone used a Meyerink ear corn feeder? They look to have the capacity I'd need. Except they Really take up the whole back of the pickup.

    Delivering DDGS to the herd?

Looks like a handy outfit. I'm wishing my bale bed was operated by an engine pump rather than electric over hydraulic...then I would convert one of those boxes over to a hydraulic orbit motor and run it off the pickup.

    Delivering DDGS to the herd?

We spent Christmas 2015 in Corpus Christi visiting my sister in law. I noticed a lot of ducks by the ocean...mallards, teal, pintails, etc...same ducks we have during the summer. I got a little jealous. Thinking those birds aren't so dumb after all!

    Delivering DDGS to the herd?

I bought 100 ton of DDGS this summer to use as a protein supplement this winter while grazing cornstalks and dormant range. Now the question becomes, how do I get it to the cows? (It was much cheaper than alfalfa per unit of protein, so I bought it without worrying about delivery) The largest...

    Electronic cattle ID

I'd like to get some opinions on electronic ID for cattle. Not as it pertains to a national ID system, but just on a ranch-level perspective. For those who use it, what's the purpose for doing so? Marketing or herd management? What do you like? What do you dislike? What would you change...

    Heifer development

What do you guys figure the heifers gain in those scenarios? Just curious. I know there are genetic, climate, and geographical differences that make some things work better than others for different outfits.

    Consigned heifers

Sounds like the 700 became 250 for some reason. I can live with that.

    Consigned heifers

I bred some extra heifers this summer, came up with about 65 bred ones to sell this fall. I consigned them to the same barn I bought them at. Suppose it was early September when I consigned them to the local barn's first Special Bred Cow & Hfr sale, Nov 5. Only one other consignment at that...

cow outfit for sale, buckaroo country....

I've never bought a ranch, but if its for sale at $50 million and it runs 9000 cows, thats about $5,555 per cow. I don't think I could buy enough land to run a cow for a year here for $5,555. I guess the leases have to be figured in to the cost, but you'd also have to figure in the income from...

    Low-cost wintering options for calves

No, I have a Besler. It has electric controls also, just hardwired in right now. I called Besler, think it was $400-450 to add one. Sounded easy enough to install.

    Low-cost wintering options for calves

It does stand up by itself, which is nice because I can roll it around by hand in the shop to get it out of the way. Next upgrade will be to get a remote control for my bale bed, would sure make hooking it up easier.

    Low-cost wintering options for calves

They will be bred in July & August. This year my heifers weighed 690 going to grass May 1 and bred up very well. Don't need to push them, just keep them growing. The tire is an old fertilizer spreader tire I got from the local co-op. I cut a hole about 12" diameter in the tread. Stuck a...

    Low-cost wintering options for calves

I would like to stay away from bunks, so I can feed in a new spot every day and not have to move bunks around. I made this rolling feed dispenser last winter, thought I could maybe use that to feed on the ground. A little more waste than bunks possibly, depending on conditions, but if the...

    Low-cost wintering options for calves

I'm brainstorming for ideas on low-cost, low-labor, low-input ways to winter our heifer calves and light steers. Here are my resources: 200 4-5 wt weaned calves, bale processor with 22 bu grain tank, bale bed, grain feeder for bale bed, metal bunks, bale rings, grass/alfalfa hay, oats/peas...
