    Two Beef Checkoffs?

What authority does Vilsack have to set up another check off and not have a referendum for three years? Does this mean he plans to manage our money? Or is this a government tax on our cattle business? I know I sound negative but I don't trust the government one bit.

    Tips for Videoing Bulls???

I am probably way out of line here and someone may tell me so but what is the big deal of videoing bulls for sale? What is wrong with actually running the bulls through the sale ring? I can read the catalog but I can't see on a video what I can in real life. I've been to a few bull sales...

    Pics of my calving setup

Thanks a lot for posting the pictures. That is one really nice barn. That would almost make cold weather calving fun.

Who says January calving is brutal?

That little one was fast! He's a healthy one. I'd sure like to see more pictures of your calving barn inside and out. That looks like a dandy. Thanks.

    Calf prices

Maybe another thought on keeping the calves after weaning is that you already have the land investment and the facility investment. What you are selling is your labor and extra feed. If you can sell your feed for more as fed to cattle than you could by selling hay or grain outright then it is...

    Calf prices

You could be right. Around here we have cheap corn and cheap hay and the cattle numbers are lower. I wonder, however, if we aren't shooting ourselves in the foot though. It sounds as if beef consumption is down and chicken is up. Will we price ourselves out of the market? I'd rather it...

Different day, different sale, different results

A radio station would love to use your story for their "It pays to advertise" commercials.

    Cow with swollen jaw

Ask your vet. I've had cows with a lump jaw that they got from getting poked with a stick that they ate and it got infected from inside. The vet took a knife and drained the puss and washed it out and then gave an antibiotic shot. The cows did ok after that but you could always see where the...

Aspartame to be secretly added to milk

It sounds to me that this is just for flavored milk or milk products like chocolate milk. I'm sure there has always been some sweetener in chocolate milk and much of the flavored yogurt. I don't know if it was aspartame though. I do have a problem with hiding the contents of milk. I'd think...

    went to the sale yesterday

Jody, I know exactly what you mean. It's always great to get a good price but when the buyers tell you how well they like your calves with their pocketbook you know it's a real compliment. I always get so nervous sitting watching cattle come through the ring and some not bringing what I think...

    Clean-up

I sold some yearling steers today that averaged 615#, average price of $165.66 or $1,019.35 per head. Seemed like a good price for a yearling steer. Heifers from the same group weighed 608, average price of $138.53 or $842.24 per head. Just wish I'd had lots more!

    ??AARP??

It would be very interesting to read the AARP response....if there was one. AARP is a bad organization working against those it proclaims to support.

    Calving ease vs. birth weight

Well, Lonecowboy, why didn't you say so sooner. Now I understand completely! To the serious responses......thanks much. I did learn something today.

    Calving ease vs. birth weight

OT, I agree with what you said about birth weights in cold and warmer climates. I have always wondered just why that is. It would almost seem to me that birthweight could depend quite a lot on the amount and quality of feed the cow had while pregnant. Just curious.

    Cattle or Grain?

The oil patch is paying $80,000 a year for truck drivers and more for other jobs according to what I read about Williston, ND. Probably similar on your side of the border. Save your 15 grand and go make a bunch of cash at a job like that for a year or two while you are young. It would give...

    Some more Herefords

Very nice looking cattle and pretty scenery as usual, Ned. I'm afraid I'd have a little trouble adjusting from 1,000 feet to 9,600 but it sure looks good in your country.
