    Cow/Calf pairs for sale

Sorry to hear that, NR. I think there's going to be a whole lot more pairs hitting the market soon, just isn't any grass or hay to keep them over. I feel real bad for anyone who has to sell what they've worked to build. Alot of good cows are going to end up as some city people's supper, too. I...

Amen to that! I am too old to fight off a mad momma!

Preg checkin' a cow - question

OK, so say the cow's not in calf? What would you feel? How far would you be able to put your arm in? Would you feel the back wall of the uterus and that'd be as far as you could go? I'm sorry if these sound like stupid questions, but I'd really like to know.

Preg checkin' a cow - question

If a person was to do this, and has never done before, what should he or she be feeling when they do? Say, the cow was at least a month to two months from calving or not. Only reason I ask is because best friend and I were hauling culls to the yards today, and some of them may or may not have...

    The Tough Breaks

OMG, she's headed out the door???? Cut her off at the pass!!! The poor woman needs to rest as best as she can under the circumstances. I can feel for her because I buggered up my tailbone a few years back. (My own damn fault.) Hope it isn't as bad as it sounds and she feels better in a few days.

    Cow Down

We had one do that a few years back, she calved in January, went down in April. Other than not being able to get her back legs under her, she was healthy. Ate and drank everything I carried to her, the calf would nurse her as she laid there. She never did get up, after two weeks I finally had...

    Soapweed

I see you asked me in another post if I enjoyed not calving cows. Yes and no. I sure didn't miss it at all when we had all the cold weather we did, I felt sorry for the guys who were dealing with it, though. I still help over at the best friend's when he needs it. Tagging, castrating, moving out...

    What Are Your Thoughts?

Good looking bull. We had Pinzquaer x Hereford cross cows, they were some of the nicest cows we had. Good mothers, milked heavy, nice udders, great temperaments. Had some purebred Pinzquaers that we bought as heifers, those things were the wingiest animals I've had the priviledge of being...

    Herd record book

Randi, I'm like you. I always bought myself some little books and made my own. That way I could put in what I wanted and needed for my own sake. The premade ones didn't have what I wanted for the info I put in.

I guess the old girl wanted to go out with a bang.

Best friend told us last night that one of the cows he bought from us two falls ago gave birth to triplets. She is 15, and was to be retired this fall. But retirement will come earlier for her as none of the calves lived. They were premature, each one weighed no more than 30 pounds. She...

does feeding time relate to calving time?

It'a a bunch of hooey. We always fed in the morning, and almost all our cows (about 95%) would calve between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. That was my time to watch them, and husband would do 11 p.m. till 5 a.m., he hardly ever found a new calf.

    Surprise

Now, now, don't be that way!! Were you crusty again this morning?  If I didn't know any better, I would've been like Shortgrass and assumed it was the ground poking through, too.

    Size limit on heifer bulls

The best heifer bull we ever bought was a bull born to a first calf heifer. 76 lb. birthweight, he only ended up weighing around 1900 as a mature bull. We used him for 6 years, then a cousin bought him from us, and he used him for another 3 years. Threw awesome, meaty calves that weaned off at...

FINALLY! A breeding plan of sorts.

Have you ever heard of WTK Continental? He was built quite similar to the bull pictured, except without horns. Dark cherry red, wonderful temperament, pigmented around the eyes and scrotum. We had a bull off of him, and we kept quite a few daughters off that bull. Good mommas, loads of milk, and...

    Polled Hereford bull calves

As much as I like Herefords, I do see a few faults with yours. Yes, they are built well, but I like to see some pigment around the eyes and on the scrotum. When we bought Herefords, male or female, we always chose the ones with pigment. I just think they look classier, but hey, that's my opinion.

    For mytfarms

There's nothing wrong with calving early. Personally, I was always proud of the weaning weights we got out of our cows, can't complain when you're pulling calves off that weigh between 700 and 850 lbs. And those were off Simm/Hereford crosses that were weighing 1200 to 1500 lbs. That extra...

What do ya think of this bull? Any opinions welcome.

I think he would look alot better if he had a little more length to him. He looks like he'll be a hard calver, because he's built like a brick (I won't say the rest). Just my opinion.

    Not A Good Day

Sorry about your bull, NR. I just can't believe you wouldn't had insurance on him. We always carried insurance on ours, had to collect twice, and have never had a problem. They settled up quite fast. Did you get any rain out of those big storms that came through your area last night? Sure...

    Moved some cows today

You are so green!!!!! I am so jealous!!!!!!!! All I see when I look out my window is white. Oh, btw, the last picture (in my opinion, anyways :-) ) would look a whole lot prettier if the cows were red.

My Bulls. Warning, blatent self promotion.

That's a good way to do business, Doug. In all the years we've been buying bulls, whether they were Herefords, Simmentals, or Angus, I don't think we've ever gotten that kind of guarantee. Maybe one year after, but never 2 or 3. I commend you!
