BIRTHDAY BUST By Steve Moreland, April 20, 2019

Soapweed, your story makes me hurt just reading it.

    Good times sometime

Better times coming I hope. The two jbs hamburger recalls don’t instill consumer confidence and that hurts us all. Salmonella is not usually a problem in beef except when poor refrigeration is used. Definitely a red flag for me.

    Spearhead branding April 23, 2018

So the steers will get creep feed I assume?

    Twins

Yes the nutrition during breeding season will affect twinning rate. Grass and mineral vary greatly from region to region and year to year.

    Twins

Twinning is genetically influenced by a twinning gene. Simmental influenced cows in this area are known to twin more than any of the other beef breeds. Personally I don’t want twins as they are a labor intensive and you tend to lose some no matter how well you manage them. The nutritional...

    2017 U.S. Beef Exports Never Better ...

Daily US cattle slaughter is around 120,000 I believe.

    Heritability of phenotype.

I will also add that the highest growth animals in a population tend to be narrower and taller. As far as spending more money on bulls my advise is make sure you get more for your extra money spent. Consistency is what we all are searching for so I personally will take the time to observe the...

    Heritability of phenotype.

I will add that there are way, way to many seed stock operations that are flushing females that are younger than 5 to 6 years old. All breeds are guilty of this.

    Heritability of phenotype.

I agree with prior posts. My advice would be that maybe none us need to select for the killer look but select for a good look. After all we want a herd of good cows. I prefer to select from side groups that at a minimum are decently consistent but the most important is the maternal side. Proven...

It would have better had he used the same size of card. Just an observation.

    The Challenge of Cow Size

Not trying to be argumentative but this is the same guy that has spent the last ten yrs. selling epds. The bigger the better concept. Managing growth curves in cattle will always be a challenge for me. Finding cattle that have yearling frame scores of 5.5 to 6.5 and then mature at 5 frame score...

    Electronic cattle ID

My reference was to the topic thread of electronic ID. Yes a scale can be a valuable tool when used correctly.

    Electronic cattle ID

I have never considered it. Not sure what I would do with it. With the current drought conditions I am not looking for any additional expenses.

    June cattle

Seriously, equiliribium of demand will be reached at some point. After that we will start backing product up again. Anyone remember the fall of 2015? The price of trucks has little to do with commodity prices. Yes, I own cattle all the way from baby calves to slaughter ready steers.

    June cattle

I wouldn't view breaking the record as all positive. Consumers will replace beef at some price level. It would be better long term if we were to plateau some time soon.

    Cow ?

Cold rain can chill a calf faster than you may realize. The smaller the calf the faster they become hypothermic. Likely no fault of the cow or calf or the feeding program.

Mrj, I think you have just illustrated how enemic our domestic beef demand is.

China announces in will lift ban on U.S. beef

I wish more beef producers were more familiar with ractopamine. It is fed to cattle the last 30-40 of the finishing diet. The current product is called Optaflexx. In hogs it is called Paylean. China bought a whole hog production system in the US from farrow to rail, lock stock and barrel so...

China announces in will lift ban on U.S. beef

Not sure what this really means as China has a ban on racotopamine. I have not seen or heard any details on the aforementioned agreement. My guess is that their racto ban will not be lifted and very little U.S. beef is destined for China. The market reaction yesterday reveals what traders think...
