a little bit of everything, except cows

Wow your country really looks good, nice dryland hay!! Wish ours looked half that good. We've been really dry the last 2 months. Our dryland hay is only yielding about 2/3 ton/acre. There is going to be some really expensive hay in this area I'm thinking. Some areas around here got a pretty...

    Calf catcher

Thanks Grassfarmer for posting pictures. I think people are always too negative and critical of anything that isn't "cowboy". We use every available contraption from calf cages on 4 wheelers to calf tables to make the work more efficient and SAFER! Not to say we can't and don't rope off our...

    Cattle economics

Interesting discussion, I'm afraid we may see $1.50 fats but feeders will probably stay close to $1.00.......IF the corn and hay prices keep climbing. Definitety a concern for those of us that are mainly cow/calf producers. Nice to have a few wheat acres to maybe take up a little slack.

    Getting calves ready to sell

Yes the market has sure slipped the last couple of weeks, but those are still good prices compared to northern MT prices. We sold 575# steers last week for 1.08 and they were about as good as any around. Still not bad compared to a few years back.

    Branded Beef Programs

This question is kind of an off shoot from the natural-organic one. I have for the last couple of years been interested in getting lined up with a natural beef program. We have been retaining ownership through the feedlot on our calves and don't use implants etc here on the ranch as calves so...

    Branding

Wow this discussion is really making me hungry. You all sound like good cooks. My crew has been branding and working the cows for the last 3 days and my 4 employees have to bring there own lunches (I think they prefer that to my bachelor cooking anyway  ). Would be nice to hire someone to...

What is happened to our cattle prices???

June live moved 115 higher today to close at 75.90, maybe the speculaters have decided to become a little more optimistic. Sorry to hear about your bull prices in Canada, no it doesn't make any sense to fatten up .20-.30 bulls.

What is happened to our cattle prices???

It doesn't make any sense to export products of any kind to another country unless they need those products. Only reason you folks in Canada want to export to the US is that our prices are higher than yours right now, soon you may have higher prices up there and we may want to send our cattle...

What is happened to our cattle prices???

It never ceases to amaze me why the USA continues to import beef when we can't get our export markets back. I understand all the baloney about free trade agreements but in the global scheme of things, what point is there in importing beef from Australia or Argentina for example and to a lesser...

    Twins Question

We always make a point of marking the tag on the heifer calf in some way so that we remember not to keep her as a replacement animal. It is easy to forget otherwise and you will waste a year of expenses on a heifer that will never get pregnant.

What is happened to our cattle prices???

Wow, only .35 cows still in Canada. You guys must still be really hurting from the BSE backlash. I don't think the price in the states is affected much at all by BSE as the day the positive cow in Alabama was announced the market went up!! Strange. So what are fats bringing in Canda?

What is happened to our cattle prices???

Can somebody explain to me why the bottom has dropped out of the fat cattle market. June live closed at 74.75 today. Thats off of a high of around 88-89 for June just a month or 2 ago. I realize that we were all kind of expecting the markets to drop off slightly this year but yikes! Thats close...

    Casteration Method and Age

It looks like I'm the odd man out in this discussion, we banded the calves at branding, 1-2 months of age. Have used the calf bands for years on thousands of calves and have never very many problems, less than with cutting I'll argue any day. They are much quicker to apply than cutting and I...

Ranchwife, Looks like you got some great help coming up there, if you can't keep those 2 hardworkers busy on your spread send them on up north, I got lots of work! LOL  Thanks for posting, sounds like you have a nice family

    She's earning her keep!

We always preg test our weaned heifers when we bangs vaccinate them. Usually find 1-3% bred, we abort them, oops that sounds bad even in cattle, but anyway then we don't have to worry about them. If we lose 1 heifer as a result of trying to calve, the preg testing looks pretty cheap. Pulling...

    Snowy day

Soapweed, Thanks for the pics, gosh those trees make a great windbreak. In this country you have to go miles to even find a lone tree. Sure wish we could grow them here. Our cows make do with coulees and a few man made shelters. Looks like you got a little more snow than we did here, only an...

Bad luck with cattle waterer today!

Question about using GFI breakers, isn't it possible that if you have your waterer on GFI's and they get a little moisture or even condensation inside the waterer they will then kick off, (which I realize that is what they are suppose to do). But in this part of the country when it get to -45...

    tried cow-won't claim calf

We have a heifer every year or so act like that. If they are plumb nuts I'll just grab the calf and put it on another cow that lost her calf. I won't put up with nutty cows. My hired man who has his own place and a small herd of cows had one like that a few years ago and was able to get the...

Bad luck with cattle waterer today!

No FH it was a bull I was raising from my own cattle, He was an AIed son of Power Design so would have been a good one. Haybuster, thanks for the input. I should have been using GFI breakers, will have to look at switching them over. I'm not an electrician and have just used regular breakers and...
