A wild couple of days

We have had a couple interesting days to put it mildly. Yesterday we had our 2nd to last heifer calve. BIG calf and a tough pull. Weak front ankles has him kinda hobbled but he has sucked and his cow loves him. Checked last heifer at 10 and she was laying there chewing her cud. Went out at 2am and she had a nice big beautiful dead calf all cleaned up. :???: Didn't look like she had roughed him up any so I will never know what the heck happened. Frustrating though! Found a neighbor with an extra twin I talked him out of. Skinned the dead calf, attached the hide and turned her in with the heifer. She sniffed her all over good and was talking to it. Calf nosed up to the bag and went to sucking! Love at first smell and sight I guess! :D Didn't have to do a thing but stand there and watch.

I gotta give little H a pat on the back. She jumped in and helped me pull the calf yesterday. She is quite a great hand and I am sure proud of her. Littlest H was handy too bringing us everything we needed. Mrs. H was gone to town chasing groceries and running errands so she missed the action. Today the wind is blowing like a freight train and a storm is coming but the moisture will be welcomed with a smile. Its amazing how the ups and downs always keep me grounded and appreciative of the blessings of the Lord. After losing that calf, I had to blink away a tear or 5 (mighta been dust) watching the new calf suck and the cow love on her. Life is good even when its not. :D

Pretty frustrating when we try to do everything right and things still don't work out. My neighbor called the other night, and when he used the words calves and wreck in the same sentence my response was "what time do you want me there." Nothing more stressfull than sick calves. He has been working his butt off saving them from the cold weather and now they are all getting pneumonia. We got the whole herd treated, hope things turn around for him.

I appreciate the encouraging words.

Big Swede, I just read your signature line again with the quote from Cory. :D Last night or early this morning (however ya look at it) I felt like a little of each.  Or maybe the right way to say it was, I felt like what I imagine each felt like. And not in a good way. I will admit I cussed a little. But then I just went back to work which is about all we can do. Both the hard pull calf and the graft are doing great tonight. Guess a little work pays off. But don't tell Obama.

My lips are sealed, keep up the good work. :)

Two of our own heifers calved this afternoon. Both unasissted. Guess maybe we are doing the odd thing right.

Either that, or just doing the odd thing, right?

Shame on you (and me) for calving while it is still March. :-)

Reminds me of a T shirt I saw recently. Went like this:
Let's eat Grandma
Let's eat, Grandma
Commas save lives!

Or takes lives!

What's that on the road, a head?

I'll have you know, these heifers didn't take instructions well. They are due Apr. 12.

Tenjoo berry muds. :D

I just got in from checking on things here and at my neighbors, who had a brother die very unexpectedly. Things are well on both fronts. Our two challenges are both laying by their mothers content under the shed. The wind still howls but happy calves make my attitude blissful even so. :D The neighbors have 6 heifers left to calve and they all were standing around chewing on the hay I fed them earlier tonight. Thinking about my great neighbors and the pain of losing someone you love so much so suddenly puts things into perspective. My little calving issues kinda seem tiny in comparison. I hope the challenges you all have ahead of you are the kind you are equipped to deal with. Be Blessed, my fine friends here on ranchers.net. Hope my commas are in the right places! :D :D :D
