We have had a couple interesting days to put it mildly. Yesterday we had our 2nd to last heifer calve. BIG calf and a tough pull. Weak front ankles has him kinda hobbled but he has sucked and his cow loves him. Checked last heifer at 10 and she was laying there chewing her cud. Went out at 2am and she had a nice big beautiful dead calf all cleaned up. :???: Didn't look like she had roughed him up any so I will never know what the heck happened. Frustrating though! Found a neighbor with an extra twin I talked him out of. Skinned the dead calf, attached the hide and turned her in with the heifer. She sniffed her all over good and was talking to it. Calf nosed up to the bag and went to sucking! Love at first smell and sight I guess!
Didn't have to do a thing but stand there and watch.
I gotta give little H a pat on the back. She jumped in and helped me pull the calf yesterday. She is quite a great hand and I am sure proud of her. Littlest H was handy too bringing us everything we needed. Mrs. H was gone to town chasing groceries and running errands so she missed the action. Today the wind is blowing like a freight train and a storm is coming but the moisture will be welcomed with a smile. Its amazing how the ups and downs always keep me grounded and appreciative of the blessings of the Lord. After losing that calf, I had to blink away a tear or 5 (mighta been dust) watching the new calf suck and the cow love on her. Life is good even when its not.
